Usher has responded after online speculation claimed a recent concert featured someone else onstage instead of the singer himself.
Videos from a performance at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on Friday, August 8, 2026, spread quickly across social media, where viewers closely examined his look and delivery. As discussion intensified, some people suggested the performer seen in the clips was a body double or even a “clone,” with some social media users jokingly comparing the performer to Varnell Hill, a fictional character from the 1990s sitcom Martin. One widely shared post even claimed that fans were demanding refunds, with one commenter writing “Usher, you can’t fool New York. That’s not you, bro. I want my money back.”
Usher addressed the rumours himself in the comments of a post about the viral footage.
“Ya’ll are funny…clone? They can’t clone this??”
He then followed up with another remark dismissing the idea.
“How ya’ll come up with this? AI ain’t that advanced.”
Much of the speculation appeared to come from fans comparing the footage with how Usher typically looks and sounds during live performances, with some claiming his face and voice seemed off. Others argued there were simpler explanations, including lighting, camera positioning and the natural variation that comes with live shows. Observers noted that MetLife Stadium’s enormous size and high-mounted venue screens can significantly alter how performers appear to different sections of the audience.
In an apparent effort to shut down the claims, Usher also posted Instagram Stories from the same concert showing himself onstage while the debate continued online.

Still, some commenters remained unconvinced. One person reacting to the story described the theory as
‘disrespectful’
and went on to say that if a stand-in really had been used,
‘he’d have made a better effort to pull this off’
by changing camera shots or removing the venue screens altogether.
This is not the first time the singer has faced claims that somebody else had taken his place onstage.
Comparable rumours circulated during his Past Present Future tour in 2024, when footage of him performing “Yeah!” prompted renewed scrutiny over both his appearance and vocals.
At the time, some viewers also suggested that a replacement performer had been used, although nothing was ever verified.
That tour did, however, run into a real issue that was publicly documented.
Usher delayed the first three shows in Atlanta after suffering a neck injury during rehearsals. The shows were originally scheduled for mid-August 2024 but were postponed, with the tour eventually launching on August 20, 2024, in Washington, D.C.
Explaining the postponement, he said:
“My hope was that with physical therapy and medical treatment, I would be able to overcome the injury and be ready for opening night.”
He added:
“Unfortunately, the injury has not healed yet, and my doctors have instructed me not to perform any shows this week.”
He later returned and completed the tour, but the latest “clone” chatter shows those kinds of theories are still following him, with fans divided over what exactly appeared in the newest clips.
