House of the Dragon season three is heading into its finale, and viewers have already been tipped off about a key detail that could shape the episode.
Nina Lopez-Corrado, who directed episode seven, has advised fans to brush up on the Battle of Tumbleton before tuning in. Her comments strongly hint that the clash from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood could be central to episode eight.
The finale premieres in the US on Sunday, August 9, at 9pm ET, with a simultaneous release at 6pm PT. Anyone trying to stay ahead of spoilers may want to be ready as soon as it becomes available.
Lopez-Corrado made the remark while speaking to Entertainment Weekly after episode seven was released.
“I do think you should start refreshing your memories for the Battle of Tumbleton,” the director said.
In Martin’s book, Tumbleton stands as one of the major moments in the wider conflict, so the reference has only added to expectations that the season will end on a huge note. The First Battle of Tumbleton features the betrayal of two dragonseeds—Ulf the White and Hugh Hammer, known as “the Two Betrayers”—who turn against Rhaenyra’s forces and side with the Greens, dramatically altering the course of the war. The battle also involves some of the most consequential dragon combat of the entire Dance of the Dragons.
The director also spoke about how the series continues to adjust parts of the source material.
She said episode seven does move away somewhat from what appears in Fire & Blood, but argued that those decisions were made to better serve the arcs of the characters and the overall shape of the show.
“We do deviate just a little bit in episode seven from what’s originally in the books,” Lopez-Corrado explained, adding that Ryan Condal and the writers had helped ‘evolve the character storylines’ for the series.
She indicated that those creative choices will continue to matter in the finale, while also highlighting the strength of both the script and the cast performances. The show’s adaptation includes significant changes to the battle itself compared to Martin’s novel, with Daemon Targaryen and his dragon Caraxes confirmed to play a role in the conflict—a departure from the source material.
The series has already been renewed for a fourth and final season, so episode eight will not close out the story entirely.
Even so, the finale arrives with major consequences looming.
Emma D’Arcy’s Rhaenyra Targaryen is back in control of the Iron Throne, but Sunfyre’s surprise return has once again altered the political and military picture.
At the same time, Ormund’s hidden dealings with Ulf the White threaten to open up another serious challenge for Rhaenyra’s faction.
The season three closer will also be the longest episode the series has delivered yet, with a runtime of 75 minutes. The episode was written by Ryan Condal and Ti Mikkel, and directed by Andrij Parekh.
In the US, House of the Dragon season three, episode eight will air on HBO at 9pm ET on Sunday, August 9. It will also stream on HBO Max at the same time.
That means viewers in Central Time can watch at 8pm, while those on the West Coast can tune in from 6pm, allowing fans across the country to see it together.
Elsewhere, the episode is set to arrive at 10am JST in Japan, 11am AEST in eastern Australia and 1pm NZST in New Zealand.
For international audiences, the release time is less ideal. In the UK, the finale lands at 2am BST on Monday, August 10, followed by 3am CEST in Central Europe and 6:30am IST in India.
