House of the Dragon season three delivered no shortage of jaw-dropping moments, but one especially unsettling sequence involving Aemond and his mother Alicent left viewers shocked throughout the season.
If this series has proved anything, it is that no situation in Westeros is ever too chaotic to become even stranger. Just when it seems the story has reached its limit, it manages to push things further.
Throughout season three, the Targaryen saga has wrapped up a run filled with betrayal, violence and deeply uncomfortable twists, culminating in a finale that aired on August 9, 2026.
Among the scenes that had fans doing double takes was the disturbing encounter between Aemond and Alicent in the penultimate episode.
Aemond is caught off guard when his mother appears before him. What begins as an emotional embrace, with Alicent offering both encouragement and regret, takes an unexpected turn when the two begin kissing.
The moment does not stop there either, escalating into a far more intimate scene on the bed.
Then, in a shocking twist, the scene is revealed to be a hallucination. It was actually Alys Rivers, played by Gayle Rankin, who was with Aemond all along, positioned above him and speaking a chilling line.
“In this moment, I will give you a son, Aemond.”
The hallucination was part of Alys’ plan to impregnate herself with Aemond’s child and begin building their own dynasty with dragon eggs at Harrenhal, though Aemond was deeply unsettled once he realized what had actually occurred.
Still, that was far from the only scene this season that sent viewers reeling.
After Rhaenyra, played by Emma D’Arcy, takes control of King’s Landing, Daemon is dispatched to face Ormund Hightower, portrayed by James Norton, and pressure him into surrendering Prince Daeron.
At first, Ormund seems to cooperate and presents Daemon with a silver-haired boy. But Alicent immediately realises something is wrong the second she sees him. The child is not her son.
It soon emerges that the boy’s hair had been dyed so he could impersonate Daeron, while the real prince remained concealed by the Hightowers.
Rhaena, played by Phoebe Campbell, has spent much of the series feeling isolated because she had not managed to bond with a dragon. That changed in the season three premiere when she successfully claimed the wild dragon Sheepstealer in the Vale.
However, the breakthrough quickly gave way to tragedy. During the Battle of the Gullet in the season premiere, Rhaena could not fully command Sheepstealer. The wild dragon, difficult to control, inadvertently turned its attack on Jacaerys’ dragon Vermax, leaving Jacaerys, played by Harry Collett, dangerously vulnerable. When Vermax was forced to dive closer to enemy ships to avoid hitting the wild dragon, the young prince was struck by arrows. The result was devastating, as Rhaenyra’s eldest son was killed in what became one of the season’s saddest and most shocking losses.
Although it did not take place in season three, one earlier moment from the franchise still stands as one of its most startling.
Incest has never been unusual in the world of Game of Thrones, especially where the Targaryens are concerned, but that did little to soften the reaction to the relationship between Daemon, played by Matt Smith, and young Rhaenyra, played by Milly Alcock, in season one.
After returning from the Stepstones, Daemon secretly takes Rhaenyra out from the Red Keep and into the streets of King’s Landing. Their evening eventually brings them to a brothel, where the tension between them becomes physical.
Because Daemon is Rhaenyra’s uncle and she is still a teenager at that point, the scene was always going to leave audiences uncomfortable.
