In what can only be described as a shocking act of parental abandonment, a couple allegedly left their 10-year-old son behind at Barcelona’s Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport after discovering his passport had expired, boarding their flight for a vacation without him rather than delay their departure. The incident unfolded in late July when documentation issues prevented the boy from boarding the aircraft bound for his parents’ home country.
According to an air-operations coordinator named Lilian who works at the airport, the boy’s parents decided to proceed with their vacation plans despite their son being unable to travel. The couple called a relative to pick up the child and simply boarded the plane anyway. When police arrived to question the boy, he explained that his parents were already onboard and heading home for vacation. “They didn’t want to waste their tickets,” Lilian said, recalling the parents’ explanation to airport staff.
The situation resulted in the aircraft being recalled to the gate. Once airport authorities alerted the pilot that a minor had been left in the terminal, contact was made and the plane was stopped. Spanish national police, the Guardia Civil, boarded and located the parents among the passengers, escorting them off the plane and to a police station for questioning.

The child was taken to a police station for safety while authorities tracked down his parents. When Guardia Civil found the couple and brought them back to the station, the boy was handed over to them. The parents were reportedly being reported for child abandonment.
The incident came as a shock to Lilian, who has worked in air traffic coordination for years. She described the abandonment as one of the most surreal experiences of her career. “I’m an air traffic controller, and I’ve seen a lot of things, but this has been completely surreal,” she said in her viral video. “I didn’t see it as normal, and the police didn’t see it normal either.”

Lilian emphasized the danger the situation posed to the child. “They call a relative, who might take half an hour, an hour or three hours, and they calmly board the flight and leave the child behind,” she said. “As a mother, I’d freak out.” She expressed her amazement that parents could possibly leave a 10-year-old unattended in an airport terminal due to documentation issues. “I’m amazed to think how parents could possibly leave their 10-year-old son at the terminal because he can’t travel due to documentation issues,” Lilian noted. “I can’t imagine leaving my child behind like that.”
