Filmed the solar eclipse? Your phone camera might be damaged

The solar eclipse may have passed, but phone repair bills are now landing for viewers who filmed it unprotected.

Jez Samuel, a mobiles expert at Uswitch.com, said that pointing an unfiltered camera lens directly at the sun risks permanently burning out the sensor. “Your phone screen is safe to look at throughout Wednesday’s eclipse – it’s the camera lens that needs protecting,” he said.

Samuel continued: “Point an unfiltered lens at the sun, and you risk burning out the sensor, just as looking with the naked eye risks your vision.”

The damage mechanism is brutal and invisible at first.

“A phone camera lens focuses sunlight into an intense point on the sensor behind it, and enough unfiltered exposure will kill pixels permanently,” Samuel added.

The result haunts every future photo.

“From then on, every shot carries the same dark marks,” he said.

Repair costs escalate fast depending on the fix.

Samuel noted that a camera glass replacement starts at £49, roughly $66.

A full module swap can exceed £250, about $337.

NASA had already flagged this exact risk.

In 2024, a Twitter user posted their uncertainty about phone sensor safety during eclipses.

“I cannot for the life of me find a definitive answer to whether or not pointing a smartphone at the solar eclipse will fry the sensor,” they wrote.

The user added their experimental impulse: “Tempted to just take a phone I don’t need and point it at the sun for 5 minutes to find out the real answer myself. In the name of science.”

NASA’s @NASAHQPhoto team replied directly.

“We asked our @NASAHQPhoto team, and the answer is yes, the phone sensor could be damaged just like any other image sensor if it’s pointed directly at the Sun,” the agency posted.

The space agency emphasized magnification danger.

“This is especially true if you’re using any sort of magnifying lens attachment on the phone,” NASA continued.

Proper filtration is non-negotiable.

“You would need to utilize the proper filters just like on any other camera,” NASA added.

The agency offered a practical workaround.

“The best practice would be to hold a pair of eclipse glasses in front of your phone’s lenses when photographing the Sun at any point other than totality,” NASA shared.

Wednesday’s eclipse obscured more than 90 percent of the sun in some regions.

It marked the most significant solar blockage since 1999’s total eclipse.

Viewers without proper glasses improvised with cardboard box pinhole projectors.

Others ignored warnings and aimed phones skyward anyway.

Abdul Othman, 28, witnessed the eclipse at the National Space Centre in Leicester, UK.

He had only learned about the event hours before it began.

“It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” Othman told PA.

He described the visual drama.

“You hear about it all the time in your life, and then to see it with your own eyes and actually see the moon go across the sky and turning the sun into just a little crescent, it’s kind of surreal,” Othman said.

The darkening sky struck him equally.

“And then when you see the sky getting darker, that’s also quite amazing to see,” he added.

Othman said he has never seen anything “on this scale” before.

“I can understand why people are into it now, how people make so many sacrifices just to see (it) once in a lifetime,” he continued.

Benjamin Firmager-Lee, 12, also shared his reaction.

“It’s like a once in a lifetime thing to see, so it was quite exciting to see how it changed over time,” he said.

The rarity amplified the thrill.

“It’s really quite rare so it’s quite cool to see,” Firmager-Lee added.

Telescope access deepened his engagement.

“Looking through all the telescopes was really interesting to see how it changed position over time,” he said.

In the viral moment, amateur astronomers and casual observers alike scrambled for safe viewing methods. Special eclipse glasses sold out in many areas. Cardboard box pinhole projectors became a popular DIY alternative for indirect viewing. Some viewers, seeking convenience, simply raised their phones to capture the phenomenon directly.

That shortcut now carries a financial sting for an unknown number of users. Dead pixels from sensor damage create permanent artifacts in every subsequent photograph. The repair cost spectrum runs from roughly $66 to over $337 depending on damage severity and phone model. Experts emphasize that screen viewing poses no risk; only the unfiltered camera lens faces destruction.

The next major total solar eclipse visible across parts of Europe will occur in 2027.
