An 18-year-old San Diego-area daredevil was arrested after allegedly turning a rented U-Haul pickup into a sideshow stunt vehicle, racking up over $5,000 in damage and felony charges.
The teen, whose name police have not publicly released, was busted Saturday when officers detained him mid-stunt in the rented truck, according to the San Diego Police Department. He was booked into San Diego County Central Jail on charges including felony vandalism, exhibition of speed and reckless driving. The U-Haul antics caused an estimated $5,153 in damage.
San Diego police released video appearing to show the teen and a passenger pulling off a series of stunts in the U-Haul at an intersection. The footage, shared by the department, captures the rented pickup being pushed to its limits in what investigators describe as a deliberate performance for online clout.
And that apparently wasn’t his only brush with reckless driving. Another video shows a white sedan darting between lanes on a highway, at one point narrowly squeezing between other vehicles. Cops say the teen routinely posted videos on social media showing himself driving recklessly around the San Diego region, building what investigators now view as a pattern of documented dangerous behavior.
Officers caught up with him Saturday, when they detained him as he was allegedly pulling the stunts in the rented pickup. The timing suggests police had been monitoring his activity or received tips that led them to the location.
But his legal problems may be just getting started. Investigators have linked him to several earlier incidents involving similar activity, police said. Those cases remain under investigation, with additional charges possible.
Facebook commenters had their own takes on the stunt show, mocking both the cost and the spectacle. One wrote: “It cost you $5,100 to power wash the street for 15 minutes?” Another fired back with sarcasm about the branded vehicle: “If not a race car, why does it have a sponsor on the sides?”
The $5,153 damage estimate covers what police say was the toll of the intersection takeover, where the U-Haul’s tires and weight tore at the road surface. Sideshows, where drivers perform donuts, burnouts and other stunts in intersections or parking lots, have plagued California cities for years, with participants often filming for TikTok, Instagram and other platforms.
In the viral moment that preceded his arrest, the teen had allegedly made a habit of documenting his own illegal driving across social media platforms, treating public roads as a personal stunt course. The U-Haul rental added a new twist to the familiar sideshow formula, substituting a commercial moving truck for the typical modified sports car or muscle car.
The San Diego Police Department has increasingly used social media itself to track and publicize sideshow enforcement, releasing footage of arrests and damaged vehicles as deterrent content. The teen’s case represents a convergence of that strategy, with his own online posts potentially becoming evidence against him.
The felony vandalism charge, rather than mere traffic citations, reflects the significant property damage and the deliberate nature of the alleged conduct. Exhibition of speed, a California vehicle code violation often applied to street racing and sideshow participation, carries additional penalties when combined with other charges.
