AOC Fires Back at Critics After Revealing She Is Freezing Her Eggs

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, 36, has fired back at critics who judged her decision to freeze her eggs.

The New York congresswoman addressed the backlash directly on Instagram after followers questioned whether she regretted the fertility preservation process. Ocasio-Cortez, who represents New York’s 14th congressional district, has been documenting her egg-freezing journey across her social media platforms in a series of unusually personal posts for the typically private lawmaker.

When asked on Instagram whether she had any regrets about freezing her eggs, Ocasio-Cortez left no room for doubt. “The answer to that simply is no,” she replied. “I was born a woman, period. And I have no control over that, and I wouldn’t want to change that.”

She continued, connecting the criticism to broader gender dynamics. “And the way I feel is, any negativity or judgment that I would receive at any point is negativity that I would receive for being a woman, whether I shared this information or not. So I might as well help others,” she wrote on the platform.

The progressive lawmaker’s decision to go public with her fertility choices comes amid mounting speculation about her political future. Ocasio-Cortez has emerged as a leading contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination, recently surpassing California Governor Gavin Newsom in prediction market odds on Polymarket. She has also kept open the possibility of challenging Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer for his New York seat.

In her initial announcement, Ocasio-Cortez framed the disclosure as a service to other women navigating similar decisions. “Normally, I keep my private life quite private. But I have made the decision to freeze my eggs. And I want to share this because I was weighing it for a very long time, and there isn’t a ton out there, and it can feel very daunting,” she shared in her video.

The lawmaker did not shy away from acknowledging the political risks of her transparency. She told viewers she was well aware that making her fertility choices public could expose her to additional scrutiny, with her personal decisions potentially becoming fodder for political attacks. That concern, however, was not enough to silence her.

“You know, men run for office… And people don’t think in the back of their mind, ‘Okay, this guy’s running for office. How old is he? Is he going to want to start a family?’ ” she said in one of her videos. “People don’t go down those rabbit holes and fixate on them for men in terms of their decision the way that they do for women,” Ocasio-Cortez added.

The congresswoman also highlighted what she described as a systemic information gap facing women. “We are not prepared for our own lives, whether that is in puberty, whether that is in pregnancy, whether that is in perimenopause, menopause… Whether you want to plan to have a family, whether you don’t plan to have children biologically,” she explained.

In the viral moment that launched the current wave of coverage, Ocasio-Cortez filmed herself unboxing the medication needed for the egg-freezing process before preparing for her first injection. She addressed her audience with characteristic directness: “Don’t be weird about this even though I know you all will be.” The video marked a striking departure from her usual social media presence, which typically focuses on policy debates and political organizing rather than intimate health decisions.

The fertility disclosure has drawn support from unexpected corners, including Katie Miller, wife of former Trump adviser Stephen Miller, who publicly backed Ocasio-Cortez’s right to make her own reproductive choices amid what outlets described as vitriolic MAGA backlash. The cross-aisle solidarity highlighted how fertility issues can transcend typical political divides even in an era of intense polarization.

Ocasio-Cortez told her followers that the decision to freeze her eggs was one she had taken “time to consider, weigh and save up for,” underscoring the financial and emotional investment involved. Her documentation of the process has included unboxing videos, explanations of the medical protocol, and reflections on the pressures women face when balancing career ambitions with family planning timelines.

The congresswoman has spent recent months campaigning across the country for progressive candidates ahead of the November midterms, using her platform to attack Trump administration policies and rally Democratic voters. She said in June that she “can’t say that I’ve ruled out” a presidential run, a shift from her earlier stance that her ambition was about changing the country rather than securing a particular title.

Ocasio-Cortez is scheduled to continue her national campaigning with upcoming appearances for progressive candidates in multiple states.
