Sandra Bullock has broken her silence on the “traumatic” death of her longtime partner Bryan Randall after keeping his ALS battle private for years.

The Oscar-winning actress, 62, opened up about the experience during an appearance on the SmartLess podcast with hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Sean Hayes. Randall, a model-turned-photographer whom Bullock began dating in 2015, died in August 2023 at age 57 following a three-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Bullock revealed that the decision to keep Randall’s diagnosis entirely secret came directly from him. “He asked me not to share. I know why he asked me not to,” she explained on the podcast. “I wasn’t allowed to speak about it. That was the request. I wasn’t even allowed to tell Amanda [Anka, Bateman’s wife]. I wasn’t allowed to tell anybody. My sister was the only one who knew for a while.”

The secrecy left Bullock isolated as she coordinated around-the-clock nursing care, sought experimental trial drugs, and managed home life during the COVID-19 pandemic. She admitted that while she initially believed she could handle the burden of silence, the reality proved far more difficult. “At first I go, ‘Oh, I can handle that. I can be quiet,'” she recalled. But the combination of managing the pandemic, the illness, and parenting her two children became what she described as “a trifecta that was pretty dark.”

Bullock noted that her choice to step back from public life during this period was deliberate. “I don’t wanna harm others because of what I do, so I think not talking for a while was good,” she said.

The actress also shared a poignant perspective on how the progressive nature of ALS altered their relationship long before Randall’s physical death. “I think where he was in his journey, both physically and mentally, I started grieving Bryan four years before he passed. There was something that had shifted,” she revealed. “My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don’t think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you’re just on this treadmill.”

While navigating the day-to-day realities of caretaking, Bullock made protecting her children a priority. Her son Louis recognized the changing household dynamic early on and stepped back to protect his own emotional space. “I didn’t want him to become the man of the family at that age,” Bullock said. “My job is to be both at that time. And I want him to be a kid during a pandemic when everything is already f–ked anyway and people are suffering everywhere.”

In the viral moment that preceded this reckoning, Randall’s family confirmed his August 5, 2023 death in a statement that revealed his private three-year battle with ALS for the first time. The announcement explained that he had chosen to keep his diagnosis out of the public eye, and expressed gratitude to the medical teams and caregivers who supported him. Bullock had been almost entirely absent from public life in the years leading up to his death, with her last major film appearance in 2022’s The Lost City.

Bullock’s return to public visibility has been gradual. She made her first appearance following Randall’s passing in 2024, and has since begun re-engaging with projects including Practical Magic 2 with Nicole Kidman, set for release in September 2026. Sources close to the actress have indicated she has “started finding joy again” nearly two years after Randall’s death, though they note she will “always be heartbroken over losing Bryan.”

The SmartLess conversation marks Bullock’s most detailed public reflection on their life together and the enduring grief of that period.

Bullock is expected to continue her gradual return to the spotlight with promotional activities for upcoming projects in Los Angeles.
