Faith Tenkley has spoken out about the emergency ocean landing that turned her solo flight into a viral spectacle off a Florida beach.
Tenkley, 23, told Gulf Coast Now that she was flying her family’s twin-engine plane from Fort Myers to the Bahamas on Saturday when mechanical trouble struck about 15 miles off Boca Raton. The experienced pilot, who had set out alone to pick up her parents, discovered her landing gear had failed and made the split-second decision to ditch in the Atlantic rather than risk a fiery runway crash.
“I was just trying to get somewhere safe,” Tenkley said in her interview with Gulf Coast Now, describing the moment she realized a conventional landing was impossible. With one engine already out and a full fuel load from a recent refueling, she feared sparks on the tarmac could ignite the aircraft.

The young pilot threaded her crippled aircraft between beachfront buildings and paddleboarders before touching down in shallow water near South Beach Park. Video shared on X by a jogger who witnessed the incident shows the plane descending low over the sand as startled beachgoers look on, then settling into the surf with its nose slightly elevated.
“Wow! A small plane flew right past me while I was running, and I recorded it making an emergency landing in the ocean near South Beach Park in Boca Raton, Florida,” the bystander posted on X alongside the footage. “I ran down the beach and caught up to it, saw the passenger safely on shore and watched the plane begin sinking…”
A lifeguard reached Tenkley within roughly 60 seconds of the splashdown, with a Boca Raton Ocean Rescue fire boat arriving moments later. Boca Raton police confirmed no injuries were reported in the incident, though Tenkley was transported to a local hospital for precautionary evaluation.
Tenkley’s decision to aim for open water rather than the crowded shoreline drew praise from observers familiar with aviation emergency protocols. The twin-engine aircraft, which she had been piloting alone on the cross-state route, came to rest partially submerged as waves lapped against its fuselage.
The jogger’s video, which quickly circulated across social platforms, captures the surreal scene of an aircraft descending toward swimmers and sunbathers on an otherwise ordinary Saturday afternoon. Tenkley managed to avoid both populated areas of the beach and the dense coastal development that lines that stretch of Palm Beach County.
In the viral moment that followed, social media users seized on the footage of the young pilot climbing from her downed plane apparently unharmed, with some hailing her quick thinking as “flawless” under extraordinary pressure. The aircraft sank gradually as rescue personnel secured the area, leaving little visible wreckage by the time many onlookers had gathered.
Tenkley has not publicly addressed the online attention directly through her own social media channels, speaking instead through her interview with the regional outlet. Her family has not issued a statement about the incident or the fate of the damaged aircraft.
The Federal Aviation Administration typically investigates emergency landings involving mechanical failure, though no timeline for such a review has been announced. Boca Raton police did not indicate whether additional agencies would examine the circumstances of the gear malfunction.
