Jake Reiner has given his first sit-down interview since the murders of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner.
The 35-year-old eldest child of the late couple spoke with KABC-TV’s Marc Cota-Robles on Thursday, describing the grief and rage he has experienced since the December 2025 killings. Jake Reiner explained how his emotions have transformed in the months following the deaths of his father, 78, and mother, 70.
“It manifests into rage, into how unfair this was, how I didn’t get a say in what happened,” he told the Los Angeles station. “I didn’t get to stop it from happening.”
“I had no choice in the matter,” Jake Reiner continued. “I just have to accept the reality of it. And to me, that is just one of the most infuriating parts of all of this.”
He added, “I’ll never understand. I don’t care how it’s explained to me. I don’t care what facts come out. I will never understand why this happened.”
Rob and Michele Reiner were killed in their California home in December 2025. Their youngest son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested for the slayings and is awaiting trial. Jake Reiner refused to answer multiple questions about his brother during the KABC-TV interview, according to the station.
However, he did confirm he has not spoken to Nick since the arrest. “I mean, he’s in jail so… you know, it’s like I physically lost my parents and then Nick was arrested and now it’s just me and Romy,” Jake Reiner shared, referring to his sister.
Jake Reiner reflected on the devotion his parents showed to all their children, including Nick, who struggled with drug abuse and was diagnosed with schizophrenia. “I can tell you they never stopped wanting to help him,” he said of his youngest brother. “They never stopped helping him.”
He went on to call “Becoming Charlie,” a 2015 movie based on Nick’s life, “a way for [Rob] to try and connect with” his youngest son. Rob Reiner directed the film, which dramatized a young man’s battles with addiction and mental illness.
Rob and Michele Reiner were found dead in their California home in December 2025. Nick Reiner was subsequently arrested and charged with their murders. The case drew national attention due to Rob Reiner’s prominence as the director of films including “When Harry Met Sally…” and “A Few Good Men,” and his earlier fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on “All in the Family.” The family’s private struggles became public through the 2015 film, which Nick Reiner co-wrote.
Jake Reiner’s interview marks the first time he has publicly addressed the killings in an extended conversation with a journalist, breaking his silence months after the tragedy that left him and Romy as the surviving children.
Nick Reiner remains in custody as he awaits trial on murder charges.
