Tom Cruise and Anne Hathaway have officially signed on to star in a “Days of Thunder” sequel, the pair announced alongside Paramount Pictures on Saturday.
The duo revealed the project in an Instagram Reel, standing in front of a bright yellow and green race car emblazoned with “Days of Thunder 2 Summer 2028.” Cruise, 64, will return as NASCAR star Cole Trickle, while Hathaway, 43, takes on the role of an engineer and team owner.
Hathaway, visibly pregnant in the clip, looked at Cruise after their pose and quipped, “Now what? Let’s make the movie!” She then suggested she should have her baby “and then make this movie,” to which the “Top Gun: Maverick” star replied, “That’s a good idea.” Cruise followed up with an enthusiastic declaration: “We’re coming out summer of 2028!” He added, “Don’t be late!” Hathaway fired back, “Are you sure you wanna go with that?” before bursting into laughter.
Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper join Cruise as producers, with Jonathan Levine set to direct.
The original “Days of Thunder” roared into theaters in 1990, pairing Cruise with then-rising Australian actress Nicole Kidman. The two met on set and married that same year, later adopting son Connor and daughter Isabella before their 2001 divorce.
Cruise was 28 when he explained his motivation for making the first film in a 1990 interview. “I wanted to take an audience for a ride at 200 miles an hour and have them live to tell about it,” he said. He continued, “I thought about the sensations of being at the track. The smell of burning rubber … the incredible feeling you get when you’re standing on the turns and the cars come around so fast it almost blows you off the wall. I wanted to get inside this world where success and failure come week to week.”
The Tony Scott-directed original became a substantial hit, grossing $157.9 million worldwide against a roughly $60 million budget, per IMDb.
“Days of Thunder 2” is scheduled to hit theaters June 2, 2028.
