Solid Rock Church has been shuttered since late 2024, and its pastor now awaits a federal trial.
The Myrtle Beach, South Carolina congregation founded by John-Paul ‘JP’ Miller, 44, collapsed under sustained weekly protests after Miller’s estranged wife Mica Miller died by suicide in April 2024. The church property, a 2.3-acre parcel Miller sold for $2.1 million, is now slated for demolition and condo development, though that teardown has not yet happened.
Miller’s lawyer, Russell Long, blamed demonstrators directly for the closure. Speaking at a press conference outside Myrtle Beach Municipal Court in November 2024, Long stated: “They show up to hold up signs and scream and speak into bull horns and yell and harass to the point where they basically killed the church.”
He continued: “The church has died. The church has closed down.”
The protests had become a fixture of Sunday services. Demonstrators gathered weekly to shout “you can’t hide from the FBI” and “justice for Mica,” News reports from 2024. The harassment, Long argued, made continued operation impossible.
Miller himself struck a bitter tone when addressing the property’s fate. In a message to The Sun News in February 2025, he wrote: “The city of (Myrtle Beach) did not come through for us, they did not protect us, they did not stop the harassment.”
He added: “So after 70 years of that chapel being protected from category 5 hurricanes, wars, and redevelopment, it will now be torn down and have condos built in its place, thanks to the city of (Myrtle Beach).”
The building’s history predated Miller’s tenure. The chapel had stood for seven decades before he established Solid Rock Church there in 2016, a year after he began an affair with Mica. At that time, she was married to a man named Jeremy, while Miller was married to Alison Williams, with whom he shares five children. Both divorced their respective spouses, and Miller and Mica wed in 2017.
The Netflix docuseries “Death of the Pastor’s Wife,” released in 2025, features friends and family describing the Millers’ relationship as toxic. Reports said that JP was “emotionally manipulative and overly controlling.” The couple separated in 2023.
In the months before Mica’s death, Miller, who was 15 years his wife’s senior, allegedly cyberstalked and tracked her. He was indicted in December 2025 on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to federal investigators. He pleaded not guilty and has not been charged in connection with her death. His trial is scheduled for October.
Mica was found dead at Lumber River State Park in North Carolina in April 2024.
The church closure and property sale represent the most concrete institutional fallout from the case, though the planned condo development remains in limbo. Miller remains free on bond pending his trial.
