Bunnie Xo has detailed the severe physical toll her divorce from Jelly Roll took on her body, revealing she dropped 20 pounds and required IV fluids from her team after struggling to eat.
The podcaster and author, 44, whose real name is Alisa DeFord, shared the stark account during a recent appearance on TODAY. She described moments when staff members had to lift her off the floor to administer treatment as her health deteriorated during the split.
“There [were] moments when my team had to pick me up off the floor and give me IVs,” she said on the NBC program. “Because I wasn’t eating. I was eating baby food to get by. I lost 20 pounds. Heartbreak, man, it’s the best freaking diet.”
Bunnie emphasized that her choice to keep her most emotional breakdowns off social media should not be read as proof she escaped unscathed. She traced that boundary back to a single vulnerable moment she shared online in 2018, footage that still lives on her YouTube channel.
“I did one time in 2018 and it’s on my YouTube and I vowed to myself that I would never do that again,” she explained. “Because one, that’s super vulnerable, but two, I don’t feel like that is productive in any way.”
Rather than raw public breakdowns, she has channeled her experience into her Dumb Blonde podcast, where listeners have heard more measured reflections on the collapse of her nearly decade-long marriage. Jelly Roll, whose real name is Jason DeFord, filed for divorce in May, and the proceedings were finalized within two months.
Bunnie pushed back against any impression that she has shrugged off the damage. “I don’t want people to think like I’m just out here acting like nothing doesn’t hurt… Yeah, it hurt,” she said. “Families get broken up, hearts get broken.”
The couple wed in 2016 shortly after they began dating, building a relationship that lasted almost 10 years before the legal end. Jelly Roll, 40, addressed the split publicly during a June concert, insisting the separation remained amicable and free of infidelity.
“Me and my wife are best friends. We will always be best friends,” he told the crowd. “We just got off the phone earlier today. Nobody cheated on nobody. She just did a whole podcast about it. You can go watch it. Every word of it is the truth. That will be my best friend forever.”
He added a direct message to Bunnie from the stage: “Bunnie, I love you, baby. Thank you for those 10 years. They were incredible. Thank you for the next 10 years of friendship and 20 beyond that.”
Bunnie has begun framing her recovery as a public demonstration of resilience rather than a private retreat. “When life hands you lemons, make freaking lemonade slushies. Like, let’s do this,” she said on TODAY.
She continued: “I want to show people strength. I want to show people resilience. I want to show people rebuilding and knowing that, like, yeah, my heart was shattered, but guess what? It’s healing, and it’s coming back even stronger.”
