The White House’s announcement that Vice President JD Vance will host a press briefing Thursday sent social media into a spiral of baseless speculation about Donald Trump’s status.
Some users online seized on the scheduling news as supposed evidence that Trump, 80, had resigned or even died, though absolutely no proof supports either claim. The president was photographed giving a speech in the Rose Garden as recently as September 2.
The White House press office X account posted Wednesday, quoting their own earlier single-eyes-emoji message: “Vice President @JDVance will take the podium tomorrow at 1:00PM.”
The post marked the first formal briefing since July 23, a 42-day gap that helped amplify the online frenzy. But the hiatus has a straightforward explanation: press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who had held the role since January 20, departed August 27, to join Trump’s MAGA Inc. Super PAC.
Leavitt, 28, hosted her final briefing on July 23 after returning from two and a half months of maternity leave following the birth of her second child with husband Nicholas Riccio. During her absence, a rotation of administration officials filled in, including Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.
Vance’s return to the podium Thursday simply continues that interim arrangement. He will serve as the administration’s lead public messenger until a permanent replacement for Leavitt is hired, according to White House officials.
The president himself does not typically conduct these briefings, making Vance’s appearance routine rather than ominous. Vance last took the podium on June 18 during Leavitt’s leave.
Trump told media in August that the search for Leavitt’s successor has drawn extraordinary interest. “I have never seen so many job applications in my life,” he said.
Leavitt offered her own perspective in her final briefing, stating that Trump is “his own best spokesperson.” No timeline has been announced for naming her replacement.
The vice president’s elevated visibility comes as he and Rubio emerge as early frontrunners in polling for the 2028 GOP presidential nomination, when Trump’s second term concludes.
The online speculation about Trump’s health or tenure follows a familiar pattern of viral misinformation that gains momentum during information vacuums, particularly when routine government scheduling intersects with social media’s tendency toward conspiratorial interpretation.
Vance’s Thursday briefing is scheduled for 1:00 PM at the White House.
