A secret underground homeless encampment was discovered along a wealthy California bike path after firefighters spotted flames burning from beneath the ground.
The fire broke out late Wednesday night along the Carpinteria Creek Bike Path in Carpinteria, a coastal city in Santa Barbara County known for its upscale homes and oceanfront properties. Crews from the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District responded just after midnight on Thursday, Aug. 27, to reports of smoke in dense vegetation on the 5400 and 5500 blocks of Carpinteria Avenue.
When personnel arrived, they spotted “a bright orange glow and flames coming from a moderate to heavy vegetation area on the Carpinteria Creek bike path,” according to the fire district’s account. What they found hidden beneath the brush was far more elaborate than a typical outdoor camp.
Personnel discovered “a fully involved hidden subterranean structure that was confirmed as a homeless encampment,” the fire district reported. Crews extinguished the blaze, which remained contained to the underground bunker itself.
No injuries were reported, and the fire did not spread into surrounding vegetation or nearby structures, fire officials said. The close call highlighted both the ingenuity and the dangers of hidden encampments in populated areas.
Ryan Kintz, the city assistant manager, told local outlet The Noozhawk that multiple city departments mobilized after the initial emergency response. The Public Works team, Code Compliance, and the Fire Marshal all met to coordinate next steps.
“The remaining work is to backfill the depression left after removal of the structure and restore the area,” Kintz said.
The structure and all associated debris have since been removed from the site, Kintz confirmed. Public Works is now focused on assessing the location and coordinating with various agencies.
“Currently assessing the site” and working with different agencies for “any necessary permitting and reporting requirements… at this point, our immediate focus is completing the remaining work and appropriately restoring the site,” Kintz added.
The Carpinteria Creek Bike Path runs through a community where median home values exceed $1 million, making the discovery of a subterranean dwelling particularly striking. The encampment’s construction — buried underground and hidden by vegetation — allowed it to remain undetected until the fire drew emergency attention.
The incident has drawn fresh attention to California’s broader homelessness crisis, where encampments have increasingly moved into unconventional and concealed spaces. Fire officials have not disclosed how long the bunker may have been occupied or whether any individuals were present when the blaze started.
Kintz indicated that restoration work at the site remains ongoing as the city navigates environmental and regulatory requirements for repairing the disturbed ground.
