Jay-Z paused his London concert Friday night to lead a stadium full of fans in serenading Beyoncé for her 45th birthday.
The 56-year-old rapper, born Shawn Corey Carter, was performing the first of two shows at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on his limited “Jay-Z 30” run when he orchestrated the mid-show celebration for his wife. Fireworks erupted around the venue as the crowd joined him in singing “Happy Birthday,” according to video posted to Instagram by People.
Beyoncé appeared on the Jumbotron in a black hoodie, smiling as she blew kisses and waved to the 60,000-plus fans singing to her.
The London dates mark a brief European leg of the “Jay-Z 30” tour, which celebrates three decades of his debut album “Reasonable Doubt” and 25 years of 2001’s “The Blueprint.” The “99 Problems” hitmaker is scheduled to take the stage again Saturday night for his second and final London show.
The couple, who married in April 2008, share three children: daughter Blue Ivy, 14, and 9-year-old twins Rumi and Sir. Blue Ivy has increasingly become part of her father’s live performances, most recently during the first night of his three-show Yankee Stadium residency in the Bronx this past July.
“Make some noise for the legendary Blue Ivy Carter,” Jay-Z said as he introduced his daughter at that New York show, prompting cheers and applause from the audience.
At the same July show, Beyoncé made a surprise appearance during her husband’s performance of the 1996 hit “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” stepping in to sing Mary J. Blige’s part. Blue Ivy also joined her father onstage to play piano during another 1996 track, “Feelin’ It.”
The birthday serenade came the same day Beyoncé released a limited-edition “Bey Keeper Collector’s Box” priced at $948.01, with only 500 units available. The price was a deliberate nod to her birth date, Sept. 4, 1981, and the release also coincided with the 20th anniversary of her second solo album, “B’Day.”
The “Love on Top” singer, who reached billionaire status last year, faced immediate backlash on social media over the nearly $950 price tag for the collector’s set.
The “Jay-Z 30” tour has otherwise been a family affair, with both his wife and eldest daughter making unannounced appearances at multiple stops. The stripped-down run of shows has focused on deep cuts and career-spanning material rather than the spectacle of Beyoncé’s own recent “Renaissance” world tour.
The couple has maintained a pattern of supporting each other’s headline performances across their two-decade relationship, with Jay-Z frequently appearing at Beyoncé’s solo shows and vice versa. Their daughter Blue Ivy has gradually moved from cameo dance appearances to instrumental roles in her father’s live band.
The rapper’s Saturday night show at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will close out the London leg of the “Jay-Z 30” tour.
