President Donald Trump has floated renaming New Mexico to “New America” in a fresh social media post.
The president, 78, shared a map of the southwestern state on Truth Social on Sunday with the word “Mexico” crossed out and “America” written in its place. The image was one of 34 posts he published in less than an hour during a rapid-fire online spree.
The New Mexico rebrand would mark the latest America-themed name change pushed by Trump. He previously ordered the Gulf of Mexico rechristened the Gulf of America and directed that Lake Ontario be renamed Lake America. Those changes have already begun appearing on some mapping platforms for U.S. Users.
The Truth Social barrage extended well beyond geographic rebranding. Trump also posted an image of his own face superimposed over wrestler Hulk Hogan’s body, complete with a “MAGA” bandana photoshopped onto his head. Another post showed the borders of Iran reshaped into an outline of the president’s head.
That Iran image landed as the U.S. Military conflict with the Middle Eastern country stretched past the six-month mark. The war has become a defining foreign policy challenge of Trump’s current term, and the president has increasingly used his social media accounts to project defiant imagery alongside policy pronouncements.
The Sunday posting frenzy underscored Trump’s reliance on Truth Social as his primary communications channel. The 34 posts in under an hour represented an especially concentrated burst of activity even by his standards, mixing official-sounding proposals with meme-style content.
The renaming push follows Trump’s pattern of using executive authority to alter long-standing geographic names. The Gulf of America designation took effect for federal use earlier this year, while Lake America’s new name has begun appearing on Google Maps for U.S.-based viewers. Private mapping companies have handled the changes inconsistently, with some platforms showing both old and new names depending on user location.
New Mexico’s name dates back to the 16th century Spanish colonial period, predating both Mexican independence and U.S. Statehood. The territory became the 47th state in 1912, keeping the name that Spanish explorers had given it centuries earlier.
Trump has not indicated whether he would pursue an official renaming through executive order or legislation, or whether the “New America” post was intended as a formal proposal. The Sunday post offered no additional context beyond the altered map image itself.
