A Beverly Hills apartment complex lost most of its roof Wednesday morning after a fast-moving multi-alarm fire overwhelmed the building and forced firefighters to retreat to defensive positions.
The blaze ignited around 10:30 a.m. On the 200 block of South Rexford Drive, the Beverly Hills Fire Department confirmed. Crews arrived to find the structure heavily engulfed and the roof already compromised by the intense heat.
“As firefighters attacked the fire, the roof began collapsing, so firefighters retreated and are using area ladder trucks to battle the blaze. There are no injuries reported,” the City of Beverly Hills said in a statement. The shift to aerial operations meant dumping high-volume water streams from above rather than entering the structure directly.
The partial roof collapse caused severe structural damage to the building, though authorities have not yet released an assessment of whether the complex can be salvaged. South Rexford Drive remains closed between Charleville Boulevard and Gregory Way to accommodate heavy emergency equipment and ongoing operations.
Residents in neighboring buildings were swiftly evacuated as a precaution. Across the street, students and staff at Beverly Vista Middle School were placed under a shelter-in-place order while crews worked to contain the threat.
The shelter-in-place was precautionary, officials emphasized, with no immediate danger reported to the school. The evacuation order for adjacent residential buildings was also described as swift, suggesting officials moved quickly to clear the area once the roof’s instability became apparent.
Firefighters continued battling the blaze from ladder trucks throughout the morning, with no timeline given for full containment. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Wednesday’s fire drew a heavy emergency response to one of Beverly Hills’ residential corridors, disrupting traffic and daily routines in the area. The closure of South Rexford Drive between two major cross streets left limited alternate routes for morning commuters.
The Beverly Hills Fire Department has not indicated when the road will reopen, noting that access depends on stabilizing the damaged structure and completing the investigation. Residents displaced by the evacuation have not yet been given a timeframe for return.
