Lindsay Clancy’s defense attorney says she is on round-the-clock suicide watch after her triple murder trial ended in a mistrial last Friday.
Kevin Reddington, 75, said that the 36-year-old Duxbury, Massachusetts, mother is “not very good” following the deadlocked jury. “She’s strong. She has incredible family support,” Reddington, 75, told the outlet. “But she is suicidal. I mean, she’s on 24/7, one-on-one suicide watch. I worry about her every day.”
The veteran defense lawyer said Clancy carries no anger toward those who testified against her during the five-week proceeding, nor toward prosecutors who sought to portray her as cold and calculating. “She was hurt by the way they would talk about her and the way they would attack her. She was hurt, but she never once expressed anger towards anybody in the system,” Reddington said. “She doesn’t have it in her DNA to be angry with anyone.”
Reddington had asked jurors to find Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity, arguing she was in the grips of severe postpartum psychosis and hallucinated a voice commanding her to kill her three children and herself.
Clancy’s case now sits in limbo as prosecutors weigh whether to retry her on the same charges, pursue a plea agreement, or drop the case entirely. The mistrial came after the jury signaled it had reached an impasse following four days of deliberation.
The children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months — were strangled in the family’s home. Reddington’s defense centered on Clancy’s documented postpartum struggles and a psychotic break he said rendered her incapable of understanding her actions.
Clancy has also pushed back against online conspiracy theories accusing her ex-husband Patrick Clancy of involvement in the children’s deaths, with Reddington defending Patrick Clancy amid social media backlash.
Prosecutors have not announced their next move in the case.
