Alec Baldwin, 68, calls the “Rust” shooting and his manslaughter trial “me at my worst” in the first trailer for a new documentary.
The trailer for “The Trial of Alec Baldwin,” directed by Rory Kennedy, shows the “30 Rock” actor reflecting on the aftermath of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins’ accidental death on the Western film’s set in 2021.
“When they told me she died, I was in shock,” Baldwin says in the footage. “I was in disbelief.”
His wife, Hilaria Baldwin, appears dealing with the intense media attention surrounding the case.
“The paparazzi are already coming,” the mom of seven tells him. “You need to take the kids out of town.”
In another scene, someone on the street shouts at Baldwin, “You killed someone by accident. How do you feel?”
After footage related to Baldwin being charged in Hutchins’ death plays, he says, “If you said to me, ‘Hike up Mount Everest and she’ll come back,’ I’d be packed and ready to go.”
“Whatever I could do,” he adds. “But there’s nothing you could do.”
Baldwin also addresses his 2024 trial, which ended in his favor.
“I want to be acquitted so I can walk out the door and everybody just leave me alone,” he says. “I never dreamed of my life that this would come down to this.”
At the end of the trailer, Baldwin says that “people who watch this will see so much of me at my worst.”
Rory Kennedy, sister of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., began filming Baldwin in 2023 and was given full access to the actor’s life throughout his trial.
“This story is a tricky one because there is Halyna, who is the victim in this story, and I, of course have enormous empathy for Halyna and her family given my own background and experience,” Rory told the outlet.
“But I think there should be room to see how there can be more than one victim,” she added. “There can be a spectrum of victims in different situations, and it’s important to have space for that.”
On Oct. 21, 2021, Hutchins was shot and killed after a prop gun that Baldwin was holding went off on the set of “Rust” in New Mexico. The movie’s director, Joel Souza, was also injured during the incident. Two years later, Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter and pleaded not guilty. Three days into his trial, the judge dismissed the case.
Baldwin told the Hollywood Reporter in April that the shooting and trial “impacted me in every way — financially, career-wise, my wife, my kids, my health.” He also revealed he’s contemplated retiring from acting.
