Gilgo Beach killer Rex Heuermann has been hit with prison discipline for drug possession and attempting to smuggle a package behind bars.
Heuermann, 62, was caught by correctional officers in mid-July at Clinton Correctional Facility, the remote maximum-security prison in New York’s Adirondack Mountains near the Canadian border, according to disciplinary records. The facility, nicknamed “Little Siberia” for its brutal winters and isolated location, currently houses some of the nation’s most notorious convicted murderers.
The records did not specify what drugs were found on Heuermann, nor did they detail the contents of the package he allegedly tried to smuggle into the prison. The incidents triggered formal disciplinary charges against the convicted serial killer, who is now facing an internal hearing scheduled for Sept. 18.
Heuermann is currently serving multiple life sentences at Clinton, one of New York state’s oldest prisons, after pleading guilty earlier this year to murdering four women and leaving their bodies along a stretch of Ocean Parkway on Long Island’s South Shore. The discovery of the women’s remains in 2010 and 2011 sparked a years-long investigation that eventually led to Heuermann’s arrest in July 2023.
The “Gilgo Beach” case became one of the most infamous unsolved mysteries in American true crime before Heuermann, a Manhattan architect, was identified as a suspect through genetic genealogy and cell phone data analysis. Prosecutors said he preyed on sex workers, murdering them and disposing of their remains in the tall marsh grass along the remote beach highway.
Heuermann’s case drew national attention not only for the brutality of the crimes but for the decade-long failure of law enforcement to identify a killer operating in plain sight. The victims—Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, Amber Costello, and Maureen Brainard-Barnes—were all in their 20s when they disappeared between 2007 and 2010.
The prison where Heuermann now resides has held other high-profile inmates throughout its history, including several convicted of multiple murders. Its remote location in Dannemora, New York, roughly 20 miles from the Canadian border, makes it one of the most geographically isolated prisons in the continental United States.
Heuermann’s disciplinary hearing next month will determine what sanctions, if any, he faces for the mid-July smuggling attempt and drug possession. Prison officials have not indicated whether the incidents could result in additional restrictions beyond those already placed on him as a maximum-security inmate serving life without parole.
