A 77-year-old man was killed and two women were hospitalized after a graffiti-covered flatbed truck jumped a Lower Manhattan curb and plowed into pedestrians Thursday morning.
The collision unfolded around 10:20 a.m. At the intersection of Canal Street and Bowery in Chinatown, where the 66-year-old driver was attempting a right turn, authorities said.
The cargo-laden vehicle, wooden pallets stacked on its deck, hurtled onto the sidewalk and struck the three victims before the motorist kept going, police said.
Video obtained by Streetsblog shows the truck moving faster than surrounding traffic and nudging another truck in its path moments before the crash. The actual impact with pedestrians and a sedan at Hester Street is not captured in that footage.
The three victims were transported to Bellevue Hospital. The 77-year-old man succumbed to his injuries there, while the two women, ages 71 and 52, were listed in stable condition, cops said.
A photo from the scene shows the three victims sprawled on the pavement — two lying right next to each other and the third a few feet away.
The trucker drove roughly one block before slamming into a sedan at Hester Street, where the vehicle finally came to a stop, police said.
The driver was taken into custody but was not immediately charged, authorities said. Law enforcement sources indicated he did not show any overt signs of impairment.
The NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is handling the ongoing investigation.
The truck’s graffiti-covered exterior and its wooden cargo were visible in footage and photos from the scene, though authorities have not indicated whether the vehicle’s condition contributed to the crash.
