Federal agents discovered more than a ton of methamphetamine concealed inside cabbage shipments crossing the US-Mexico border this week.
The Drug Enforcement Administration’s Houston division released footage Thursday showing agents unpacking heads of cabbage from cardboard boxes, with one clip capturing an agent slicing open a vegetable to expose a massive drug stash hidden inside. Additional photographs distributed by the agency depicted wheelbarrows overflowing with seized methamphetamine. The DEA confirmed the total haul weighed at least 2,000 pounds.
The operation unfolded at the agency’s McAllen office, located in Texas’s Rio Grande Valley region along the southern border. The DEA identified the bust as part of an ongoing Homeland Security Taskforce investigation, conducted jointly with federal border agencies and Texas state enforcement personnel.
“Strong partnerships and relentless enforcement produce real results,” the DEA said in its statement accompanying the release.
The seizure arrives amid a sustained methamphetamine epidemic that has affected American communities for years. Mexican drug trafficking organizations have driven much of the supply, with operations that initially involved smuggling ephedrine into California to manufacture the drug, according to prior PBS reporting on the crisis’s origins.
The Trump administration has prioritized drug interdiction efforts, including authorizing the targeted sinking of vessels suspected of transporting narcotics into the United States. The Rio Grande Valley bust represents one of the largest recent land-based seizures connected to that broader enforcement push.
Long-term methamphetamine use carries severe health consequences, including dental decay, organ damage, and chronic mental health complications, according to public health data cited by the agency.
The DEA did not announce arrests or specify whether the cabbage shipment was destined for a particular distribution point. The joint taskforce investigation remains active.
The Houston division continues to process evidence from Thursday’s seizure.
