Bettina Trump broke her silence Monday to defend accepting a lavish wedding gift from a Russian oligarch with ties to Vladimir Putin.
Bettina, who married Donald Trump Jr. On May 21 at a private island ceremony in the Bahamas, took to Instagram after a ProPublica report revealed that Umar Kremlev had paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for post-wedding celebrations. The 43-year-old Kremlev, who has headed the International Boxing Association since 2020, funded a separate private island reception and a fireworks display for the couple and their guests.
“Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding,” Bettina wrote on Instagram. “It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful.”
The couple’s actual ceremony had been family-only, Bettina explained, with the weekend gathering originally planned as a separate event. “It was never intended to be our wedding weekend,” she wrote. “When our original wedding plans changed, we simply decided to get married before it and arrived at an already planned weekend as newlyweds.”
Bettina’s original hope for a White House wedding had been abandoned due to the war with Iran, forcing the couple to relocate their plans to the Bahamas.
Kremlev was among roughly 50 guests who attended, joining Don Jr.’s siblings Eric, Ivanka and Tiffany. President Trump, first lady Melania Trump and Barron Trump were not present. The oligarch’s attendance came just days after he had traveled to China as part of a delegation accompanying Putin, according to Chinese state media.
Bettina pushed back hard against any suggestion of political maneuvering behind the gift. “It’s unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister simply because of who someone is or where they come from,” she wrote.
“Friendship doesn’t require a political motive,” she continued. “Generosity doesn’t automatically come with an agenda. And sometimes a wedding gift is simply a wedding gift.”
She closed her defense with a declaration of gratitude that made clear she would not distance herself from Kremlev. “We are fortunate to have wonderful friends from all over the world, and we will never be embarrassed or apologetic about being grateful for them.”
What remains unexplained is how the couple connected with Kremlev, or why Don Jr. — whom Forbes estimates is worth $300 million — did not cover the costs of his own wedding festivities. The Trump Organization executive has built a public profile as a fierce defender of his father’s political movement, making the acceptance of six-figure hospitality from a Putin-linked figure a notable contrast.
Don Jr. Himself has not publicly addressed the financing arrangement.
