Elizabeth Holmes’ X account has posted a cryptic selfie from prison that has already been viewed more than 7 million times.
The account, which is run by her long-time partner Billy Evans while Holmes serves an 11-year sentence at Bryan Federal Prison Camp in Texas, shared the image late Sunday. It shows Holmes, 42, in full makeup blowing a kiss to the camera. “The answer to every challenge lies in your heart,” reads the accompanying post.
The account has been actively engaging with commenters in replies written as if from Holmes herself. When one user asked “wya,” the account fired back, “Bryan Federal Prison Camp.” And when another told her she hasn’t changed at all, the account replied, “True. But I don’t think that’s the insult you meant it to be.”
The snake ring visible in the photo also drew questions, with the account claiming in one reply that “is from a Taylor Swift merch stand.”
Holmes does not have internet access in federal prison, and NPR has previously reported that Evans operates the account on her behalf.
The sudden viral surge comes as Holmes is back in the public eye following the release of a documentary trailer last week. “You Can See Everything,” from filmmaker Lance Oppenheim, follows Holmes in the weeks before she reported to federal prison in May 2023. The project grew into a three-year production that continued after she was incarcerated.
Holmes was convicted by jury in January 2022 of one count of conspiracy to defraud investors and three counts of wire fraud. She was sentenced to 11 years and three months in federal prison and later ordered, jointly with former Theranos president Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, to pay more than $452 million in restitution.
The Theranos saga began when Holmes was just 19 and founded the blood-testing company, spending years promoting technology she claimed could run a wide range of tests from a simple finger prick. The company exploded in Silicon Valley and was valued at roughly $9 billion before investigations uncovered serious problems with the technology and revealed Theranos could not perform the sweeping array of tests Holmes had claimed.
The new documentary marks the latest attempt to capture the Holmes story for the screen, joining previous projects including “The Dropout” starring Amanda Seyfried.
Holmes is expected to remain at Bryan Federal Prison Camp through her full sentence.
