Two prominent Lake Havasu City business owners died Saturday night when their high-speed boat launched onto land and slammed into a campsite area.
Charles Romer, 65, and Jennifer Luzzi, 59, were pronounced dead at the scene after the 2019 36-foot Douglas Marine vessel they were in struck a peninsula on the Arizona side of the lake. The crash occurred just north of Cattail Cove State Park shortly after 7 p.m.
Mohave County Sheriff’s Office Division of Boating Safety deputies received reports of a boating collision and arrived at approximately 7:08 p.m. To find the boat upside down on land. The two occupants were discovered unresponsive near the wreckage.
Deputies immediately began performing life-saving measures on Romer and Luzzi. Firefighters from San Bernardino County and Lake Havasu City also responded to assist with the emergency efforts.
Despite the combined rescue attempts, neither occupant survived. Both were pronounced dead at the crash site.
Authorities have not released additional details about what caused the boat to strike the peninsula. Investigators have also not disclosed whether any other factors contributed to the high-speed crash.
Romer and Luzzi were both identified as Lake Havasu City residents. Their prominence in the local business community has drawn significant attention to the fatal incident.
The Douglas Marine boat, a 36-foot model from 2019, came to rest upside down after going airborne following the peninsula impact. The vessel’s final position on land, rather than in the water, underscored the force of the collision.
The area where the crash occurred, north of Cattail Cove State Park, is a popular recreation spot on the Arizona-California border lake. Saturday evening boating traffic is typically heavy during summer months.
The Mohave County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash. No further information has been released regarding potential contributing factors such as speed, visibility conditions, or mechanical issues.
