Margaret Rog, 75, pleaded not guilty after her arrest for leaving her husband stranded on a toilet for nearly a full day.
The Monongalia County woman posted a $75,000 bond following her court appearance last Tuesday, online records show, after authorities accused her of watching her ailing spouse suffer without summoning aid. Her husband, 76, who endured dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and legal blindness, perished in a hospital ten days after the prolonged ordeal.
He had entered the bathroom around 3 p.m. On Aug. 20, according to the sheriff’s office. When Rog found herself unable to assist him off the toilet, she elected not to phone for emergency services or any outside help. Instead, she remained in the residence as her husband groaned in visible distress, then retired to bed while he remained fixed in place.
For nineteen consecutive hours, the elderly man received no food, no water and none of his prescribed medications, investigators determined. He sat unattended and unresponsive through the night as his wife slept.
The following morning, a speech therapist arrived for a scheduled in-home appointment around 10 a.m. The visiting professional discovered the husband in a dire state and immediately summoned an ambulance.
At the hospital, physicians catalogued catastrophic damage. The patient presented with heart failure, respiratory failure, pulmonary embolism, hypernatremia, sepsis and rhabdomyolysis. Medical staff also noted wounds on his backside, pronounced shortness of breath and a markedly altered mental status.
He succumbed on Aug. 31.
Investigators later concluded that the injuries and deteriorated condition stemming from the toilet confinement served as “significant contributing factors” to his death.
Rog’s own statements compounded the case against her. She allegedly issued multiple self-incriminating remarks to law enforcement personnel, adult protection services workers and relatives as the probe unfolded. She also purportedly acknowledged her husband’s dependency on assistance yet consciously chose to withhold it.
The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office leveled a single charge of abuse or neglect of an incapacitated adult. Online arrest records confirm Rog was taken into custody last Tuesday.
The case has drawn scrutiny to the circumstances that left a vulnerable elderly man without intervention for nearly a full day despite regular professional visits to the home. The speech therapist’s arrival proved the only external contact that broke the prolonged isolation.
Court documents obtained by local outlets detail the cascade of medical failures that followed the extended immobilization. Pulmonary embolism and rhabdomyolysis — conditions frequently linked to sustained pressure and muscle breakdown from fixed positioning — featured prominently among the diagnoses.
Rog’s husband had required substantial daily support given his trio of debilitating conditions. Dementia and Alzheimer’s had compromised his cognitive function, while legal blindness rendered him unable to navigate his surroundings independently.
The $75,000 bond allowed Rog’s release pending further proceedings. Her not-guilty plea, entered during the same Tuesday court session as her initial appearance, sets the matter toward future hearings.
The Monongalia County Prosecutor’s Office did not immediately provide additional comment when approached.
Authorities continue to examine the full scope of neglect allegations as the case advances through the West Virginia court system.
