Bill Belichick is firing back at what he calls “ridiculous” speculation about his girlfriend’s role in his football program.
The North Carolina Tar Heels head coach, 74, told the Wall Street Journal in an interview published Wednesday that Jordon Hudson, 25, has no official capacity with the university despite persistent rumors fueled by her sideline presence and a controversial television moment last year. “The way the story was picked up was a long way from that,” he told the outlet. “Like, ‘She’s trying to be the general manager of the team,’ and it’s so ridiculous.”
Belichick traced the misunderstanding to a single email he sent after taking the job in December, when he was juggling multiple television appearances, a radio show, and a book release. “I sent an email when I got here and I said, ‘Can you please forward any requests to Jordon about my personal appearances so that I can work and coordinate them outside the university?'” he explained. “Didn’t have anything to do with the university.”
That message, he claimed, was deliberately twisted. “That was leaked [and] released as ‘Jordon’s involved in every single thing that I do and she’s copied on every email,'” he continued. “Just a flat-out lie.” According to the Wall Street Journal, students from the Marching Tar Heels had claimed they saw Hudson leaving football practice multiple times last year, and Belichick had asked communications staff to copy her on his emails.
When asked directly about Hudson’s actual involvement, Belichick offered a narrower scope. “There are some things that she helps me schedule or look at,” he told the outlet. “It’s not North Carolina stuff.” A university spokesperson confirmed to the Journal that Hudson does not have football “responsibilities.”
Hudson’s professional footprint exists largely outside Chapel Hill. She lists herself as COO of Belichick Productions on LinkedIn and founded a company called Trouble Cub Enterprises, which has applied for trademarks on catchphrases associated with her boyfriend. The company also filed to trademark the phrase “gold digger” in August 2025 for use on jewelry or keychains, according to documents.
Between December 2025 and June 2026, Hudson filed public records requests seeking copies of communications between university staff and the media regarding her relationship with Belichick. Belichick told the Journal he hadn’t seen the requests himself and didn’t want to speak for her, though he suggested “she was asking for things that had already been sent.” Hudson declined to be interviewed for the Wall Street Journal piece; during the reporter’s conversation with Belichick, she reportedly walked past and uttered “oop” before turning away.
The couple’s nearly 50-year age gap has drawn scrutiny since their relationship became public, but Belichick has consistently dismissed outside opinion. “I’ve never been too worried about what everybody else thinks,” he told the Journal. “Just try to do what I feel like is best for me and what’s right.”
The scrutiny intensified in April 2025 when Hudson interrupted a “CBS Sunday Morning” interview as journalist Tony Dokoupil asked Belichick how the couple met. “We’re not talking about that,” she said bluntly from off-camera. Dokoupil noted in a voiceover that the pair didn’t feel “comfortable” discussing their relationship, describing Hudson as a “constant presence” during the sit-down promoting Belichick’s book, “The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football.”
Belichick defended Hudson days after the segment went viral, issuing a statement that accused the program of violating his agreed parameters. “Unfortunately, that expectation was not honored during the interview,” he stated. “I was surprised when unrelated topics were introduced, and I repeatedly expressed to the reporter, Tony Dokoupil, and the producers that I preferred to keep the conversation centered on the book.”
He further alleged that CBS used “selectively edited clips and stills from just a few minutes of the interview to suggest a false narrative — that Jordon was attempting to control the conversation — which is simply not true.” He characterized their bond as both “personal and professional,” noting that Hudson had interjected only to “reiterate that point to help refocus the discussion” after he had raised objections “several times.”
The former New England Patriots coach, who won six Super Bowls during his 24-year tenure, is now navigating a different kind of media playbook in the college ranks. The Wall Street Journal interview marks his most extensive pushback yet against a narrative that has shadowed his first months in Chapel Hill.
Belichick is scheduled to lead the Tar Heels into their season opener in Charlotte.
