Jessica Lange has revealed the single condition she demanded before agreeing to return for “American Horror Story” Season 13.
The Oscar-winning actress, 77, disclosed during an appearance Tuesday on “Live with Kelly and Mark” that she told series co-creator Ryan Murphy, 60, she would only come back if she could reprise all four of her previous characters from the anthology series. Lange’s return marks her first full season since departing the FX show in 2015 after “Freak Show.”
“Ryan Murphy talked me into coming back,” Lange said on the daytime talk show. “First, he talked to me about playing Constance [Langdon], which I think was his favorite character that I did, but I said, ‘I’ll come back if I can [play] all four characters.'”
Mark Consuelos, 55, who appeared in Season 2 as patient Spivey, pressed Lange about Sister Jude Martin from “Asylum.”
“Yes, from our season, yes!” Lange replied. “But not in the habit. She’s in the later part of the season — she’s institutionalized herself — when she’s a patient there.”
Lange first entered the “AHS” universe as Constance Langdon in Season 1, “Murder House,” the nosy neighbor with dark secrets. She later revived that role for a guest spot in Season 8, “Apocalypse.” Between those appearances, she embodied Fiona Goode, the ruthless Supreme witch in Season 3, “Coven,” and Elsa Mars, the ambitious German expat running a freak show in Season 4.
The actress indicated that her return season leans heavily into franchise nostalgia. “Everybody is a returning character, pretty much,” she noted during the interview.
Murphy had previously offered a different account of Lange’s demands. In August, he told reporters that Lange’s condition was a musical number. “I just thought the number 13 was infused with so much in the horror genre, and I wanted to do a greatest-hits season,” he said at the time. “I didn’t know what it was, but I knew that I could only do it with Jessica, so we had dinner and I pitched [it to] her and she said, ‘Great. I’m in as long as I have a musical number.'”
Lange described the experience of stepping back into her past roles as deeply satisfying. “I like all four of those characters,” she shared. “It was fun to play them, and coming back, it was great to [play] them again.”
The “King Kong” star also hinted at an additional surprise for viewers. “I threw in an extra that’s kind of a mystery character,” she teased. When Kelly Ripa, 55, asked whether this fifth role might signal a Season 14 return, Lange shut down the speculation with a blunt, “No!”
The thirteenth installment, which Murphy has called a “greatest-hits season,” premieres Thursday on FX. The season’s numerical significance in horror lore — Friday the 13th, the 13 witches in a coven — helped inspire the retrospective concept. The full cast includes numerous franchise veterans alongside newcomer Alex Consani.
Lange’s departure from “AHS” after “Freak Show” in 2015 ended what had been a defining run for both the actress and the series. Her performances as Constance, Sister Jude, Fiona and Elsa earned her multiple Emmy wins and established her as the anthology’s signature leading lady. While she made that brief return as Constance in “Apocalypse,” Season 13 represents her most substantial involvement in nearly a decade.
The new season launches September 24 on FX.
