A 17-year-old boy and his mother were shot in the leg during a targeted attack inside a Bronx laundromat Monday evening, and the gunman remained at large the following day.
The pair were inside Astor Laundromat on Astor Avenue near Holland Avenue in the Allerton section when a man in his 20s stormed in and opened fire, according to police and law-enforcement sources. Both victims, the teen and his 37-year-old mother, were struck in the right leg during the burst of gunfire.
Emergency responders rushed both victims to Jacobi Medical Center, where authorities said they were listed in stable condition. The injuries, while serious, were not life-threatening.
Investigators believe the shooter was specifically aiming for the mother and son, though the motive behind the attack was not immediately known, sources said. The targeted nature of the shooting has raised concerns in the neighborhood about whether the family was known to the assailant.
The gunman is described as approximately 5-foot-6 tall and believed to be in his 20s, according to police. He fled the scene immediately after the shooting and had not been apprehended by Tuesday.
The attack unfolded in a typically busy commercial corridor, where residents regularly handle routine errands. A laundromat, with its open doors and steady foot traffic, offered little barrier to a determined assailant.
The NYPD continued searching for the shooter Tuesday as the mother and son recovered from their wounds. No arrests had been made, and police did not immediately release additional details about potential leads in the case.
