A California family that has pumped millions into Democratic campaigns is facing fresh scrutiny over ties to suspected Chinese spy Fang Fang.
CC Yin, 89, and relatives have donated more than $4.4 million to state and federal political causes through their McDonald’s franchise fortune, according to campaign records cited by CBS News. The family’s giving has flowed to Gov. Gavin Newsom, former Vice President Kamala Harris, Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis and other prominent Democrats.
The renewed attention follows the White House’s release of FBI files in August concerning Fang, also known as Christine Fang, whose relationship with former Rep. Eric Swalwell sparked a national-security firestorm. The documents describe a working relationship between Fang and CC Yin through the Asian Pacific American Public Affairs organization, which he helped establish.
The FBI files include interviews with Swalwell in which he described Fang as his point of contact for APAPA. The name of the APAPA official who directed Swalwell to Fang is redacted, though two people familiar with the files identified that person as CC Yin, reports said.
“I love America, and I strongly condemn any effort by any foreign government to interfere in American politics or undermine our democracy,” CC Yin said.
There is no evidence the Yin family knew about Fang’s alleged espionage activities, and neither CC Yin nor Henry Yin has been accused by U.S. Law enforcement of acting as a foreign agent. The family’s political connections extend beyond campaign checks to direct access: Henry Yin appeared alongside Newsom during the governor’s 2023 trip to China, according to publicly available photographs.
State and federal records break down the family’s giving in detail. Their McDonald’s franchise business donated $364,817 to campaigns supporting Newsom, $80,000 to his 2019 inauguration committee and another $50,000 to a nonprofit at Newsom’s direction, reports said. Kounalakis received $221,700 between 2018 and 2025. Harris collected $214,300 between 2019 and 2024. Former California Treasurer John Chiang received $115,680, and Rep. Ro Khanna’s congressional campaigns took in $15,800 since 2017.
National-security experts have zeroed in on Henry Yin’s documented meetings in China with officials tied to the Chinese government’s United Front system, which Beijing uses to cultivate influence abroad.
“This is how the United Front works. They build these friendly, long-term relationships, then at some point they make requests,” Cheryl Yu, a fellow at The Jamestown Foundation, said.
Fang’s alleged espionage operation centered on building relationships with up-and-coming politicians, particularly in the Bay Area. She became close to Swalwell, a California Democrat, and helped place an intern in his office before abruptly leaving the country in 2015 amid an FBI investigation. The Swalwell connection made her one of the most publicized suspected Chinese intelligence operatives in recent years.
The outlet reached out to the offices of all politicians who received Yin family funding for comment.
