Donald Trump’s new White House streaming channel drew fewer than 1,000 live viewers during its first morning, sparkering widespread mockery online.
The service, titled Trump TV: The Essentials Station, began its 24-hour YouTube livestream on Monday, September 21, offering a continuous rotation of speeches, appearances, and clips featuring the president. The launch came just days after Trump barred CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from White House access, accusing them of publishing what he called “FAKE NEWS,” and after ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox suspended presidential pool coverage in solidarity.
Audience figures recorded during the channel’s first night quickly became a focal point for critics. Approximately 8,000 people were watching when the stream launched at 7 p.m., but that number fell below 4,000 roughly 90 minutes later. By around 10:40 p.m., viewership had dropped to 2,425, and just 1,123 were tuned in at approximately 3:30 a.m. As the channel aired a rerun of a speech Trump delivered alongside King Charles during a visit to Windsor the previous year.
Things dipped further the following morning, with a screenshot showing 996 people watching as another older Trump speech played. The existing White House YouTube channel carrying the stream has over 3.27 million followers, making the live audience a tiny fraction of its overall subscriber base.
The stream did recover modestly to around 1,700 viewers as Trump prepared to address the United Nations General Assembly.
Deputy assistant Kaelan Dorr promoted the service as a direct pipeline for administration achievements, saying: “the press, in some cases, reported inaccurately or not at all on the Administration’s many record-breaking accomplishments.”
Social media users seized on the declining numbers. One Facebook user responded: “Finally! A way to turn Trump off!”
Another Facebook commenter simply asked: “The Truman Show 2.0?”, referencing the 1998 Jim Carrey film about a man unaware he’s trapped in a reality show.
Over on X, a commenter reacted to the audience numbers by writing: “Wow, a 1,000 watching, 100s of millions not”.
Reddit users also piled on. One person joked by linking the channel to a real-life reality show: “It only has one show on it. The Biggest Loser!”
Another Reddit commenter put those numbers into perspective: “8000 people tuned into Trump TV and after a couple of hours only 996 were still watching….so, like 20 Trumpers in every state.”
Trump has continued to defend the restrictions imposed on CNN, MS NOW, and Politico. The three organizations have filed a lawsuit challenging the ban, arguing it violates First Amendment protections, as the legal dispute over their White House access continues.
Trump is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly.
