Jalen Brunson capped his historic weekend by hosting the “Saturday Night Live” season 52 premiere.
The Knicks point guard, 30, became the first New York Knicks player ever to helm the long-running NBC sketch show when he took the stage at 30 Rockefeller on Saturday night. His appearance came mere hours after the franchise celebrated its first NBA championship in 53 years with a victory at Madison Square Garden.
Brunson, who celebrated his birthday earlier this month, opened his monologue with characteristic understatement about his whirlwind summer.
“So the first three quarters of the show are gonna be god awful, but the last sketch is gonna be amazing,” he joked, nodding to the Knicks’ habit of dramatic Finals comebacks. He also quipped about returning to Madison Square Garden for the upcoming season in “the exact same spot where Taylor and Travis got married” in July.
Fellow Knicks players Josh Hart, OG Anunoby, Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns sat in the audience for the taping and later joined Brunson on stage. During the monologue, Brunson fielded questions from his championship teammates in a bit that drew some of the night’s biggest laughs.
Bridges asked whether his reported seven-foot wingspan was accurate and if he really took a $113 million pay cut to re-sign with the Knicks. Towns proclaimed himself a “big fan” before cheekily asking if he could “foul out of ‘SNL.'” When Brunson said no, Towns replied, “so I could be here like the whole show? Nice,” prompting a roaring ovation.
Anunoby got in a dig about Game 4, asking Brunson, “Remember in game 4 when you took that shot at the end and you missed it” — referencing the San Antonio moment when Anunoby tipped in Brunson’s miss to seal the victory.
Brunson turned the tables on Hart, putting the shooting guard on the spot over a December 2025 celebration that became internet infamous. He asked why Hart poked his thumb into his backside on live television while celebrating the NBA Cup win, a viral clip that had already made the rounds online.
The host also took aim at ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith, with longtime cast member Kenan Thompson portraying the broadcaster. Brunson’s version of Smith owed him an apology for doubting his ability to lead the Knicks to a title.
Knicks superfan Ben Stiller, watching from elsewhere, declared his verdict on X during the broadcast. “BEST MONOLOGUE EVER,” the actor wrote.
Musical guest Katseye, the pop group, performed during the episode and returned for the goodnights wearing Knicks jackets and hats. Brunson closed by telling the audience he’s “Going to get back to my real job pretty soon.”
The night before, Brunson had braved an approaching nor’easter to surprise fans camping outside 30 Rockefeller for standby tickets. NBC pages distributed Levain cookies on his behalf to more than 100 people waiting in line from 7 p.m. To midnight, a ritual required to receive a number that might — or might not — yield studio admission the next day.
“It was really, really nice. And I do believe that it actually came from him and his team and they were generous because I’m sure when he hears that people are sitting on the sidewalk, even with potential tickets, that’s a big deal,” a fan named Judson said of the gesture. The signature cookies retail for $5.75 each.
Brunson joins a short list of NBA players who have hosted “SNL” in the show’s nearly 51-year history. According to a Sporting News compilation, he is only the fifth basketball player to take the role, following Bill Russell, Michael Jordan, LeBron James and three-time host Charles Barkley. Among athletes from New York-based teams, he is just the third to host, after former Giants quarterback Eli Manning and Yankees legend Derek Jeter.
During the episode, Brunson showed off his singing voice in a sketch parodying Disney’s “High School Musical.” The final sketch of the night placed him in the Knicks locker room, where his third-grade basketball coach sneaked in to express pride and crack jokes about the largest steak Brunson had ever eaten.
The Knicks begin their title defense at home against the Boston Celtics.
