Chad Lowe’s family is mourning the death of his 13-year-old daughter Fiona.
The actor, 58, and his wife Kim Painter confirmed the loss in a statement issued Tuesday, describing the teenager as “the light of our lives.” Fiona was the middle of the couple’s three daughters, between Mabel, 17, and Nixie, 10.
“We are deeply heartbroken by the loss of our beloved Fiona. She was a loving young girl who was smart, creative and loved to dance,” the family said in their statement.
“She was adored by her sisters and she was deeply loved by her parents. In fact, she was the light of our lives. Her passing is devastating for our entire family and we ask for prayers and privacy at this time.”
The family concluded their message with a plea for those struggling with mental health to seek help, directing people to the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by calling or texting 988.
Lowe had celebrated Fiona’s milestone moments publicly in recent months. In November 2025, he marked her birthday on Instagram with a photo showing her smiling in cowboy boots.
“Celebrating Fiona officially becoming a teen today!!” he wrote in the post. “Keep dancing through life FiBear! Love you soooo much!!”
The family’s resilience had already been tested earlier this year. In February 2025, Lowe shared photographs of all three daughters visiting the remains of their childhood home in Los Angeles, which was destroyed in the Palisades fire. The images showed Mabel, Fiona and Nixie with their arms around each other.
“The way they’ve handled this whole devastating experience is nothing short of remarkable,” Lowe wrote at the time. “I am in awe of their spirit and resilience. Helping them navigate these tough times is my sole purpose. Being their dad is my life’s greatest joy and privilege.”
Lowe, the younger brother of actor Rob Lowe, has spoken frequently about the centrality of fatherhood to his identity. On the “Still Here Hollywood” podcast in August 2024, he reflected on raising daughters in what he described as a still-misogynistic world.
“It takes what I’ve known intellectually about women and all of equality and the glass ceiling that’s there, and how it’s a misogynistic world in a lot of ways … and it’s put it in my heart, because I have three daughters,” he said. “And so I look at the world, really, from their perspective.”
He added that the view wasn’t entirely bleak, noting societal progress. “So I see how we’re really becoming conscious of the role of women,” he continued.
Lowe and Painter, a producer, married in August 2010. The actor was previously married to Hilary Swank; that marriage ended in January 2006 after eight years.
The family’s statement did not specify a cause of death or provide details about services.
