Joy Behar, 83, Misses ‘The View’ After Suffering Serious On-Set Injury

Joy Behar is expected back at “The View” by midweek after dislocating her shoulder in a backstage fall.

The 83-year-old comedian missed Thursday’s broadcast when she caught her heel backstage and injured herself, her representative said in a statement. The rep added that Behar’s shoulder “wasn’t broken and is back in place” and that she “is excited to be back at the table as quickly as possible.”

Sunny Hostin, 57, opened Thursday’s show by explaining both absences to the studio audience. “So, Whoopi [Goldberg] is still out filming a movie,” she said of the show’s usual moderator. “And, unfortunately, our dear friend Joy dislocated her shoulder.”

After the audience gasped, Hostin continued, “Yeah, so she’s recovering and will be back soon.”

Hostin then revealed why producers tapped her to fill the moderator seat typically held by Goldberg, or by Behar when the EGOT winner is away. “I’m the next oldest,” she said, before quickly pivoting: “Or, let’s say, seasoned. I like seasoned better!”

The panel for Thursday’s show included Hostin’s regular co-hosts Sara Haines, Ana Navarro and Alyssa Farah Griffin, plus guest host Sherri Shepherd. “This is a squad right here,” Farah Griffin said about the group. “I like this.”

Behar’s injury comes just weeks after she returned from a two-week absence in June to stage her play, “My First Ex-Husband,” in London. The production, which comically explores marriage and divorce, had debuted Off-Broadway in New York in February 2025.

Before leaving for Europe, Behar pushed back against media framing of her trip. “There’s been a lot of media attention on me lately because I’m taking off the next two weeks,” she said on the show. “They’re calling it a hiatus. It’s not a hiatus.”

“It’s not a hiatus,” the comedian added, clarifying that she was going away to “work.”

On the May 26 episode of the “Behind the Table” podcast, Behar mapped out her itinerary: Paris first, where she’d write “in various cafes” and visit exhibits, followed by the London run of her play.

When she returned to the show on June 16, Behar reported that the UK audiences had embraced the production. “Turns out women all over the world hate their husbands,” she joked to her co-hosts. “Everybody loved it. It was a great experience.”

Behar has been part of “The View” since its 1997 launch, with the exception of two seasons away from the panel. Her upcoming return would restore the show’s typical moderator rotation, with Goldberg also expected back from her film shoot.
