Michael Douglas has admitted he and Kathleen Turner carried on a secret affair during the filming of their 1984 blockbuster “Romancing the Stone,” ending four decades of public denials from both stars.
The 82-year-old Oscar winner, in an excerpt from his forthcoming memoir “One Helluva Ride” shared by People on Friday, described how he would sneak into Turner’s hotel room after long days shooting in the Mexican jungle. At the time, Douglas was married to his first wife, Diandra Luker, though he wrote that the couple were already separated and “both having extramarital affairs.”

Turner, 72, had spent years carefully maintaining their cover story, repeating it across multiple interviews and talk show appearances. The “Peggy Sue Got Married” star consistently framed their connection as intense attraction that never crossed into physical territory, always citing Luker’s arrival on set as the moment that halted any possibility.
On “Larry King Live” in 2008, a caller directly asked Turner whether she and Douglas had “a relationship outside of working.”

“Well, let me — only a good friendship,” she replied on the CNN program. She acknowledged becoming “rather attracted” to the Oscar winner during production, but said Luker’s appearance “put an end to that,” She added: “We just became extremely good friends.”

A decade later, Turner offered a more emotionally candid version of the same narrative during a “Good Morning America” appearance. She admitted she had wanted something more and believed they were “falling madly in love,” yet insisted nothing happened because Luker came to Mexico and made clear the marriage was still intact.
That same year, Turner appeared on a British chat show and confessed to feeling “rather romantic towards Michael,” but again claimed that ended once Luker arrived. Her stated principle remained firm: “So that was that. You don’t mess with other women’s marriages.”

By 2021, Turner was still fielding questions about a possible Douglas dalliance. In a Los Angeles Times interview, she said she had “certainly had a crush on Michael during ‘Romancing.'” She revealed Douglas had told her he was separated, making it seem “as though … we could have a relationship,” but maintained that Luker’s arrival “killed that.” She admitted she had been “knocked out by him for a while.”

Later that year, she continued to deny any physical affair in an interview, saying: “Oh, I was yearning, babe, but he was still married…” She characterized their dynamic as “wonderful sexual tension.”

In 2023, when pressed again about how close she and Douglas really got during filming, Turner simply replied: “None of your business.”
Douglas’s memoir excerpt reveals the affair ended abruptly when Luker and their son Cameron visited the set, leading to a confrontation with Turner. The conversation “gave Kathleen pause” because “she didn’t want to interfere,” prompting the co-stars to end their involvement. Douglas wrote that he returned to Luker for their son’s sake, though he acknowledged, “we shouldn’t have gotten back together. After that first split, it was never the same between us ever again.”

Douglas explained that he and Turner then constructed their false narrative specifically to “protect” Luker and Cameron. He quoted their fabricated talking points: “Yes, we confessed, we had amazing chemistry. Yes, we were both, as Kathleen said, ‘terrible flirts,’ and yes, we were both tempted, but nothing ever happened between us.” He then flatly declared: “That was a lie.”

Douglas and Luker ultimately divorced in 2000. He later married Catherine Zeta-Jones, with whom he shares son Dylan, 26, and daughter Carys, 23. Turner married Jay Weiss in 1984, the same year “Romancing the Stone” premiered; they divorced in 2007 and share daughter Rachel, 38. The former co-stars reunited on screen for the 1985 sequel “The Jewel of the Nile,” the 1989 dark comedy “The War of the Roses,” and decades later for Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method.”

Douglas’s full memoir “One Helluva Ride” is scheduled for release in the coming months.
