Anne Hathaway credits Rihanna for revolutionizing how she approaches dressing her baby bump.
The “Verity” star, 43, told Gayle King on CBS Mornings on Friday that the pop icon fundamentally altered maternity fashion expectations. “I think that we have Rihanna to thank,” Hathaway shared. “She changed the game! And when I saw her, what she was doing with her maternity style, I just realized that I just needed to use my imagination and go out there and have more fun.”

Hathaway has maintained a packed promotional schedule since revealing her third pregnancy in June, pairing the news with a succession of bold red-carpet moments. King singled out one look in particular during their interview: the denim and cascading blue cropped top from Prabal Gurung that became a personal favorite. “You look so glamorous on the red carpet,” King told her.
“I was so excited for that outfit!” Hathaway smiled back.
The actress also gave credit to her longtime stylist Erin Walsh for helping execute the vision.

Rihanna’s own maternity fashion journey began in earnest ahead of her first child’s birth in 2022, when she made clear she had no intention of retreating to conventional pregnancy wear. Speaking to Vogue that year, she declared, “When I found out I was pregnant, I thought to myself, There’s no way I’m going to go shopping in no maternity aisle. I’m sorry—it’s too much fun to get dressed up. I’m not going to let that part disappear because my body is changing.”

Through three pregnancies, the singer and entrepreneur has consistently rejected traditional maternity dressing in favor of sheer dresses, skin-tight bodysuits, and crop tops that highlight rather than conceal her changing figure.

Hathaway’s recent wardrobe has followed a similarly adventurous path. Beyond the much-discussed Prabal Gurung cropped top, she has appeared in a bright red Ashlyn jumpsuit, an ethereal empire waist cerulean gown from Dior, and a form-fitting mermaid hem gown — also from Prabal Gurung — among other statement pieces.
The mutual admiration between the two women stretches back years to their time filming “Ocean’s 8” together. Hathaway previously recounted a memorable on-set exchange with her co-star after she gave birth to her second son in 2016.
“Rihanna looks up and goes, ‘Damn, girl, you got an ass!'” Hathaway recalled. “‘You’ve got an ass like me!'”

That camaraderie has clearly endured as both women have navigated motherhood under public scrutiny, each developing distinctive approaches to pregnancy style that reject outdated norms.
Hathaway’s current pregnancy marks her third child with husband Adam Shulman; the couple are already parents to sons Jonathan and Jack.
