Trump Reveals Melania’s Odd Nickname for Him After 21 Years of Marriage

Donald Trump revealed that Melania Trump calls him “sir” after 21 years of marriage.

The former president, 78, shared the detail during a rally in Texas on Monday while attacking Democratic state representative James Talarico, who is leading GOP Senate candidate Ken Paxton in the race for Texas attorney general. Trump was mocking Talarico’s dietary habits when he let slip how his wife addresses him in private.

“My wife told me ‘sir, you have to do me a favor — it’s not vay-gan, it’s vee-gan,'” Trump told the crowd. He continued: “Now he says he loves meat, but he’s a vegan — see, Melania? I got that right. He’s a vegan. He wants to eat a piece of lettuce, a little piece of lettuce, please.”

The “sir” remark came as Trump insisted Talarico is vegan, a claim the Democrat denies. Talarico had previously spoken at the Texas Humane Legislation Network about reducing meat consumption as an “existential” part of fighting climate change.

This was not the first time Trump has pulled back the curtain on the couple’s unusual marital terminology. At an Iowa event last year, he disclosed that he calls his wife “first lady” rather than any traditional pet name.

“One year ago, I remember saying to our great first lady, I said, ‘you know, first lady,’ I call her ‘first lady’ because it makes me feel good. ‘First lady.’ Isn’t it terrible? Saying, ‘Good night, first lady, my darling’?” Trump recounted.

He then offered a blunt explanation for the habit. “Because it reminds me that I’m president,” he said. “That’s why. Now, I said, ‘First lady, it’s terrible. Nobody wants to join our military force.'”

The Slovenian-born former model, now 54, has herself written about their early connection in her self-titled memoir. She described meeting Trump when she was 28 and feeling an “instant connection” despite the age gap.

“He was a bit older than me, but I, at the age of twenty-eight, felt an instant connection with him,” Melania wrote in her book. She praised his demeanor, noting: “He projected a sense of authenticity. He had a zest for life that was infectious. He was successful and hardworking, but also so down to earth and real. I really liked that about him.”

The marriage has drawn intense public scrutiny since Trump’s 2016 election, with observers parsing everything from their public appearances to scheduling gaps for signs of strain. Rumors have swirled about body doubles, affection levels, and tensions with Trump’s children from his previous marriages, including reported friction between Melania and Ivanka Trump over White House roles.

The “sir” and “first lady” exchanges stand in marked contrast to the more conventional pet names typical of long-term couples, and Trump himself seemed aware of the oddity. He called his own habit “terrible” even while defending it, and the asymmetry — her deference, his self-reminder of power — has fueled fresh commentary about the dynamic between them.

Trump’s Texas appearance also produced a separate viral moment when he struggled to pronounce “vegan” correctly, repeatedly saying “vay-gan” before Melania’s correction. The rally came as he continues campaigning for the 2024 presidential election.
