Kim Kardashian, 44, is resurrecting a piece of Hollywood royalty for her Hulu series.
The reality star turned actress has recreated Elizabeth Taylor’s famous “Scorpio Evening Cape” for Season 2 of “All’s Fair,” where she plays high-powered divorce attorney Allura Grant. The black velvet hooded piece, originally designed by Tiziani Roma, features two embellished scorpions on the chest and the hidden back of the hood, with bright ivory silk lining the interior.
The original cape made its legendary debut at Grace Kelly’s 40th birthday party in 1969, an event dubbed the “Scorpio Ball” for the princess’s zodiac sign — which also happened to be shared by Taylor’s then-husband Richard Burton. Taylor paired the dramatic piece with the famous Taylor-Burton Diamond necklace, a 69.42-carat drop that she later sold in 1979 for $5 million to Mouawad to help finance a hospital in Botswana following the couple’s divorce.
Kardashian appears to have added her own version of the sparkling necklace for the scene as well, though it remains unclear whether she acquired the actual cape at Christie’s 2011 Elizabeth Taylor Collection auction, purchased it privately afterward, or simply had the look recreated for the series. That sale saw the piece hammer at $60,000 before buyer’s premium pushed the final price to $74,500.
The auction listing noted an additional fashion history connection: “At this time, Karl Lagerfeld was Tiziani’s freelance designer, and this cape may well be one of his designs.”
Hulu’s sneak peek reveals the cape’s dramatic potential extends beyond Grant’s closet. Sarah Paulson’s character Carrington Lane also wears the piece in at least one trailer moment, suggesting the wardrobe department may have produced multiples for the show’s purposes.
Kardashian, born October 21, narrowly misses the Scorpio window by just two days — a minor astrological mismatch that hasn’t dimmed her enthusiasm for the piece.
This isn’t the first time the Skims founder has mined her personal archives for Allura Grant’s wardrobe. During Season 1, Kardashian contributed both vintage and archival pieces from her own collection, along with a slew of real and faux Hermès Birkin bags, to establish her character’s elite Los Angeles aesthetic.
The fashion-forward approach aligns with Grant’s status as a glamorous divorce attorney navigating wealthy clients and complicated personal entanglements in Ryan Murphy’s legal drama. The Calabasas native’s eye for statement pieces has become something of a signature element for the series, blurring the line between Kardashian’s personal style and her fictional alter ego.
With production moving forward on the sophomore season, the expanded trailer hints at even more ambitious wardrobe moments to come. The brief clips released so far suggest Kardashian and the show’s costume department are prepared to push Grant’s look toward more historically referenced territory.
The Taylor cape recreation represents perhaps the most direct conversation between Hollywood’s golden age and contemporary celebrity culture that the series has attempted — a garment that once connected two of the 20th century’s most photographed women now refracted through one of the 21st century’s most ubiquitous stars.
