California High School Football Team Forfeits Game Amid Explosive Campus Controversy

More than 200 students stormed out of Piner Junior Senior High School on Friday to demand accountability after the football captain posted a message supporting men accused in a Cornell University gang rape case.

The Santa Rosa campus exploded into protest following an Instagram post earlier this month in which the captain wrote “Free the Cornell 7,” a slogan tied to seven students facing accusations that they sexually assaulted a woman at a fraternity party in 2024. Students who walked out believed the player had faced little or no consequences for the message, The Press Democrat reported.

An anonymous parent of a Piner cheerleader told the newspaper that the captain was barred from a team dinner Thursday but said they did not know whether any other disciplinary action followed. The school’s full response to the post remains unclear, and SFGATE noted that available accounts do not establish whether officials took further steps beyond excluding him from that single event.

The walkout landed in the middle of a brutal week for the Prospectors football program. Head coach Adam Rosenstein told The Press Democrat that the team had only five healthy linemen available, forcing Piner to forfeit its scheduled Saturday matchup against Archie Williams High School in San Anselmo. The forfeit was confirmed Friday evening, the same day students poured out of classrooms.

The loss drops Piner to a 2-4 overall record and 0-2 in conference play, according to MaxPreps.

The captain’s post echoed demonstrations that have erupted in Los Angeles, Seattle and Philadelphia over the Cornell case, where protesters have alleged the university mishandled its investigation into the rape accusations. The seven accused students were initially suspended but later allowed to resume classes under certain conditions, generating sustained outrage from activists who say Cornell botched its response to the alleged assault.

At Piner, however, the fight has centered on whether a student athlete should face stiffer penalties for voicing support for accused rapists. The Friday demonstration stretched across the Santa Rosa campus as teenagers pressed administrators for answers about why the captain appeared to escape meaningful punishment.

Rosenstein did not address the social media controversy when discussing the forfeit, attributing the cancelled game solely to the depleted roster. The confluence of the two crises — the viral post and the personnel shortage — has left the program reeling and the school district facing scrutiny from multiple directions.

The Cornell case itself exploded into national attention after the accused students were linked to the Psi Upsilon fraternity and the university’s disciplinary process drew criticism from victim advocates. The “Free the Cornell 7” phrase has circulated across social media platforms as a rallying cry for those who believe the accused were treated unfairly, while opponents have condemned it as a slap at survivors of sexual violence.

Piner officials have not publicly detailed what discipline the captain received, if any, beyond the reported team dinner exclusion. The anonymous cheerleader parent told The Press Democrat they were unaware of additional consequences, leaving the extent of accountability an open question as students returned to class following the walkout.
