Shane Gillis Speaks Out After Backlash Over ‘Incel’ SNL Monologue and Swearing on Live TV

Shane Gillis broke his silence after his return to Saturday Night Live drew fire for an edgy monologue and an on-air slip.

The comedian, 37, hosted the NBC sketch show for the second time on Saturday, October 10, stepping back into Studio 8H roughly five months after his first hosting stint in February. His closing remarks that night included an apology for what had transpired earlier in the broadcast.

“And sorry about earlier. Thank you guys very much. I had a good time,” Gillis said at the show’s end, addressing both the studio audience and viewers at home. He delivered the line after thanking musical guest Rosalia.

The mea culsa capped a night that began with a monologue that quickly polarized social media. Gillis opened by recounting his discomfort at a New York public gym, setting up a string of observations about women’s athletic wear that drew particular heat.

“I tried to go to a public gym. Going to the public gym as a fat guy, especially in New York, is a nightmare, dude,” he began. “It’s just the hottest gay guys you’ve ever seen. They’re jacked and they look at me, like, ‘Yeah, right.’ ‘I know, dude.'”

Gillis then pivoted to describing women’s shorts in explicit terms. “Also, I haven’t been to the gym in so long I didn’t know women just dress like w***** now?” he continued. “Look, I’m sorry, there’s no other way to describe [it]. Have you seen it? I’ve seen it. You’ve seen the shorts? They’re those neon, like, artificial vape-colored [shorts], and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole.”

He added a warning about the filming culture he claimed to have encountered: “And don’t look! You’re not allowed to look. For real, don’t look, because they are filming. I’m in the background of ten TikToks right now.”

Reaction on X was swift, with one viewer writing that Gillis sounded “like an incel” and another questioning whether SNL had approved the monologue’s content.

The monologue also included a Hitler comparison that prompted visible discomfort in the studio audience. “I’ll tell you the thing that I’m really bothered by is: I’ve balded directly into an Adolf Hitler haircut,” Gillis joked. “And it’s not good. Because I give a lot of speeches and the front falls down a lot, and there’s no way to adjust it without looking exactly like [Hitler].”

The controversy extended beyond the monologue into a scripted sketch. During a Dr. Seuss parody alongside cast members Mikey Day and Andrew Dismukes, Gillis played the son of Day’s Cat in the Hat character. The sketch centered on Dismukes’s Sam I Am pressuring the father to eat green eggs and ham.

“Hey, what the hell is wrong with you? My dad said he doesn’t like green eggs and ham. Drop it. Walk away,” Gillis’s character snapped. The tension escalated until he added: “Bro, it’s a non-starter. He said he doesn’t f***ing,” trailing off as he caught himself mid-curse.

Gillis first joined SNL as a cast member in 2019 but was fired before ever appearing on air when past podcast remarks surfaced, including slurs targeting Asian people and gay men. He spent years building a stand-up career and podcast following before Lorne Michaels invited him back as a host in February 2024, a booking that itself generated significant debate about cancellation and second chances in comedy.
