Ben Affleck has finally addressed the decade-old “Sad Affleck” meme that turned his blank stare into internet legend.
The 52-year-old actor opened up about the moment during an appearance on the Happy Sad Podcast with Josh Horowitz, revealing how the phenomenon has followed him into his own home. Affleck, who stars in the upcoming Dunkin’ commercial that also pokes fun at his gloomy public persona, told Horowitz that his children have turned his famously morose expression into a household game.
“Sad Affleck shows up a ton. My kids are obsessed with taking my picture and trying to find the funniest sticker to make out of it. It’s the worst possible photo,” he said on the podcast. “What it’s taught me is that my general demeanour is that of depressed.”
The meme originated in 2016 during the press tour for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, when Affleck sat alongside Henry Cavill for an interview. While Cavill energetically discussed the film, Affleck sat silently, staring into space with a visibly dejected expression. Fans quickly added Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” to the clip, sending it viral and even pushing the song back onto the charts.
Affleck’s concern about the meme’s impact on his family surfaced years earlier. In a 2022 interview with the Los Angeles Times, he admitted he found the joke funny at first but worried about his children’s reaction. “The ‘Sad Affleck’ meme — that was funny to me… But then my kids see it and I think, ‘Oh, are they going to think their dad is fundamentally sad or they have to worry about me?'” he said at the time.
The actor’s resting face has continued to generate headlines at major events. His appearance at the 2023 Grammy Awards alongside then-wife Jennifer Lopez spawned fresh speculation about his mood, with viewers interpreting his expression as an existential crisis in real-time.
Affleck addressed that incident directly on Jimmy Kimmel Live! In 2023, pushing back against the narrative that he was miserable. “I had a good time at the Grammys,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in a separate interview. “My wife was going, and I thought: ‘Well, there’ll be good music. It might be fun.’ At movie award shows, it’s speeches and, like, sound-mixing webinars. But I thought this would be fun.”
He elaborated to Kimmel that his appearance stems from biology rather than emotional state, explaining he has a “very unhappy-looking resting face” and that’s simply “how God made me.”

The Boston native has increasingly leaned into the joke rather than fighting it. His new Dunkin’ commercial, which aired during the 2024 Grammy Awards broadcast, features him attempting to become a pop star with the self-deprecating line “How hard can it be?” — a wink at his perceived lack of enthusiasm for performing.
Affleck’s daughter has reportedly embraced the family lore, nicknaming him “the beleaguered man” based on the enduring memes.
The actor shares three children with ex-wife Jennifer Garner — Violet, 18, Seraphina, 15, and Samuel, 12 — while Lopez has twins Emme and Max, 16, from her previous marriage to Marc Anthony. Affleck and Lopez finalized their divorce in early 2024 after two years of marriage.

Affleck continues to balance his self-aware commercial work with directing and acting projects, with his next feature film as director scheduled for release later this year.
