Famed Comedian Reveals Criminals Targeted Him During Brief Trip to Notorious California City

Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias says thieves broke into his SUV during a recent stop in Oakland.

The comedian, 48, had traveled to the California city for a performance at Oakland Arena when the break-in occurred last week. He was visiting Lake Merritt, a popular waterfront spot roughly two miles from the venue, when criminals targeted his vehicle parked nearby.

“Hello from Oakland. So beautiful. Hard to believe they broke into our SUV only 200 feet away from this pic,” Iglesias posted on X, sharing a photo from the lake’s edge.

The post drew immediate reaction from social media users familiar with the city’s reputation for property crime. One commenter referenced the recent closure of Oakland’s only In-N-Out burger location, which shut down earlier this year amid safety concerns. “Not hard to believe at all. You’re in Oakland. You are only five miles away from the closing of the only In-N-Out ever,” the user wrote. “All because of legalized criminalism, brought to you courtesy of Democratic policies.”

Other commenters shared similar experiences. “A project manager at my old employer had his backpack stolen from his truck while he was at a gas station in Oakland,” wrote X user Garrett Courtney. “They’re bold out there– he was RIGHT THERE managing the gas nozzle. Lost a Surface laptop and some expensive camera equipment,” Courtney added.

Iglesias did not indicate in his post what items were taken from his SUV or whether any arrests were made. The comedian has built a career as one of America’s highest-grossing stand-up acts, known for his storytelling style and self-deprecating humor about his weight, family and Mexican-American upbringing.

The Oakland incident comes as the city continues to grapple with elevated crime rates that have drawn national attention. The In-N-Out closure cited by commenters occurred in January, with the company citing repeated car break-ins, property damage and armed robberies of customers and employees as making the location untenable despite its profitability.

Iglesias is currently on the road for “The 1976 Tour: A Fluffy Celebration,” a trek hitting arenas and major venues across North America and Australia through early 2027. His next upcoming performance takes place at the North Charleston Coliseum in South Carolina on Oct. 16.
