Selma Blair Released From Jail as She Faces Up to 7 Years for Violent Airplane Incident

Selma Blair has been released from custody on bail after a midair meltdown that now leaves the actress facing years in prison.

The “Legally Blonde” star, 54, appeared before Judge Indira Kahn, who set her bail at $20,000 cash, $60,000 bond, or a $60,000 partially secured bond. Her case was adjourned until Jan. 19, 2027, and the judge granted an order of protection to the hospital nurse Blair allegedly assaulted during the chaotic episode.

Blair is represented by defense attorneys Shawn Barnes and Joshua Retzus. She is staring at two to seven years behind bars if convicted on the charges now stacked against her.

The trouble began Sunday aboard a Delta flight from Los Angeles to New York City. Blair allegedly punched one flight attendant, bit another, and tried to open the aircraft door while the plane was in the air. Flight crew restrained her aboard the aircraft, and law enforcement officers were waiting when the plane touched down at John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The actress was taken into custody after landing and transported by ambulance to a hospital for evaluation. The situation only escalated from there. While en route, Blair allegedly repeatedly kicked a Port Authority police officer in the head. Once at the hospital, she allegedly assaulted a nurse, who later pressed charges.

Blair now faces federal assault allegations tied to the alleged in-flight incident, plus two state assault charges stemming from the alleged attacks on the officer and nurse. The FBI has opened an investigation into the alleged assault aboard the aircraft.

A representative for the actress said that Blair experienced a medical emergency that led to the alleged conduct.

“Upon landing, she received immediate medical attention and is currently in stable condition,” the representative said.

Delta also weighed in on the incident, saying that the airline has “zero tolerance for unruly or unlawful behavior, as the safety of our customers and crew always comes first.”

The alleged outburst marks a dramatic turn for Blair, who has been open about past struggles with substance use and health challenges. She previously drew headlines in 2016 when she was removed from a flight while visibly intoxicated, later describing herself as “so messed up” and crediting that incident with pushing her toward sobriety.

Blair’s next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 19, 2027.
