Kimberly Guilfoyle is out as U.S. Ambassador to Greece after the White House pressured her to resign.
The former Fox News personality, 56, announced her departure on X late Thursday, framing it as a voluntary decision despite the administration’s push. Her exit follows a Wall Street Journal report that exposed text messages in which she asked a donor for $100,000 to pay off her American Express bill before her Senate confirmation as ambassador.
Guilfoyle’s defiant social media post struck a notably different tone than the circumstances of her ouster. “My gratitude and respect for President Trump and Secretary Rubio remain unwavering,” she wrote on X. “I am proud of what we accomplished together, and I will always be a loyal supporter of President Trump and his mission to Make America Great Again.”

White House press secretary Katie Zacharia had confirmed hours earlier that the administration had asked Guilfoyle to step down, making the former prosecutor’s insistence that she was leaving on her own terms all the more pointed. The scandal had reportedly irritated Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who now faces the task of managing diplomatic fallout from a personnel controversy in a key NATO ally.
The financial arrangement at the center of the controversy involved a direct appeal to a political donor. According to the Journal’s reporting, Guilfoyle solicited the six-figure payment to cover personal credit card debt while awaiting her confirmation to the Athens post, a revelation that raised immediate questions about whether she had engaged in a pay-to-play scheme.

Guilfoyle forcefully denied any wrongdoing in her resignation statement. “These allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity,” she wrote on X. “I have dedicated my professional life to fighting for justice, standing up for what is right, and defending the values that make America exceptional.”
The San Francisco-born attorney, who was previously married to California Governor Gavin Newsom before their 2006 divorce, continued her defense with characteristic combativeness. “I will not allow false accusations to define my decades of public service,” she added in the same post.

Her personal connections to power have long defined Guilfoyle’s public profile. She became engaged to Donald Trump Jr. In 2020, though the couple later ended their relationship. That engagement, combined with her high-profile role as a Trump campaign surrogate and her earlier marriage to a rising Democratic politician, made her one of the more conspicuous figures in the former president’s orbit.
The ambassadorship to Greece represented her first formal government position after years in media and political advisory roles. Trump had nominated her to the post following his return to the presidency, installing a loyalist with limited diplomatic experience in a country of strategic importance at the southeastern edge of Europe.
Guilfoyle’s departure message sought to project continuity rather than concession. “While my time as Ambassador may be coming to an end, my commitment to President Trump, the America First movement, and the country I love will never end,” she wrote on X, the platform where she chose to deliver both her resignation and her rebuttal to the allegations against her.
The episode marks another personnel controversy for an administration that has moved aggressively to install loyalists across government, only to see several face ethical scrutiny. The specific nature of the donor solicitation—seeking personal financial relief rather than campaign contributions—distinguished it from more conventional political fundraising controversies.
For Rubio, the scandal presents an early test of his stewardship at the State Department. The Florida senator turned diplomat had reportedly been displeased by the revelations about Guilfoyle’s conduct, and her forced departure comes as he attempts to establish credibility with career foreign service officers who have viewed the Trump administration’s approach to diplomacy with skepticism.
The Athens embassy will now operate under leadership uncertainty as the administration identifies a replacement. Greece remains a critical partner in regional security arrangements, managing tense relations with neighboring Turkey while serving as a frontline state for migration into the European Union.
