Teen Speaks Out After Viral Video Showed Him Giving an Elderly Man the Shoes Off His Feet

Jordan Hope is speaking out after a stranger’s camera caught him handing his own shoes to an elderly man he had never met.

The 18-year-old Maricopa, Arizona, high school graduate was driving to the bank earlier this month when he spotted the man struggling through a Walgreens parking lot in badly worn footwear. Hope, who had initially kept driving, felt compelled to turn around.

“I just felt like God told me to go over there, turn around and just give him some new slides,” he explained in an interview with AZFamily.

Yareli Madrid, a local resident, happened to witness the moment on Monday, October 5, and captured photographs and video that she later shared in the Facebook group The Original City of Maricopa, AZ. Madrid emphasized that Hope had acted without any audience in mind.

“Watching this young man take the shoes off his own feet and give them to an older man who needed them truly touched my heart,” Madrid wrote in her post. “What makes it even more special is that he did it without anyone watching, without cameras, without expecting recognition or praise. He simply saw someone in need and helped from the goodness of his heart.”

The exchange might have ended there, but Hope drove back to the Walgreens after pulling away. He found the man inside attempting to buy candy, purchased it for him, then arranged a ride for both of them to a nearby Culver’s where they shared lunch. During their time together, Hope learned the man had lost his wife just two weeks before.

“That honestly broke my heart,” Hope said. “I just think he needed a friend.”

The teenager has continued checking in on the man by phone every day since their meeting. A GoFundMe launched on the man’s behalf has raised approximately $1,000, which Hope said will cover groceries and other expenses.

“I’m just a man trying to spread positivity in the Lord’s work,” Hope shared.

The footage Madrid posted spread rapidly through local social channels before drawing broader national attention, transforming a private gesture into a widely circulated example of spontaneous community care. Hope has maintained that his faith rather than any desire for recognition prompted him to stop that day in the Walgreens parking lot.
