Massachusetts Man ‘Blew Madre to Pieces’ After Dispute Over Mom’s 84 Foster Cats, Report Says

Ryan Hanafin pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder after prosecutors revealed he sent his cousin a Snapchat message boasting he “blew madre to pieces.”

Ryan Hanafin, 22, was arraigned Thursday in Reading, Massachusetts, following his extradition from Vermont, where he was arrested Oct. 8. He stands accused of killing his mother, Andria Hanafin, 49, a veterinary technician who had reportedly told her husband that evening she wanted their son to move out of the family home.

Matthew Hanafin discovered his wife’s body around midnight in their kitchen. She had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Their 13-year-old son was inside the home at the time.

The fatal confrontation allegedly stemmed from a dispute over Andria Hanafin’s animal rescue efforts. Officials and court documents indicate Ryan Hanafin had sparred with his mother over the sheer volume of cats she was fostering. Roughly 84 felines were recovered from the residence and transferred to a local MSPCA-Angell shelter, according to NBC 10 Boston.

The alleged killing capped a day of tension in the household. Authorities say Matthew Hanafin last saw his son the morning of Oct. 7, when he told the 22-year-old to get a job and do something with his life. Later that evening, Andria Hanafin called her husband with the ultimatum about their son moving out.

After the shooting, Ryan Hanafin fled to Vermont. Before leaving, he messaged a cousin over Snapchat with a chilling account of the violence.

“Blew madre to pieces,” he wrote.

He followed with another message, according to prosecutors: “Blew her [expletive] smooth off.”

Police searching Ryan Hanafin’s bedroom found more than 19 firearms inside what prosecutors described as “hoarding conditions.” He faces additional charges because 15 of the guns were not secured, reports said.

More than 100 community members gathered Wednesday at a vigil honoring the slain mother, remembered by neighbors as a caretaker and friendly presence. Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan attended and spoke about the trauma rippling through the town.

“You know, these are the kinds of things that frighten people,” she said.

“They’re hard for kids to process,” she continued.

“Even for folks like the police and fire department, we sometimes underestimate the trauma that these things cause to people. Yes, it’s their job to go and do that. That doesn’t make it easier.”

The case has drawn attention both for its brutality and its bizarre triggering dispute. Andria Hanafin’s devotion to animal rescue — caring for 84 foster cats in her home — became a point of fatal conflict with the son she had raised. The feline survivors of that household are now in shelter care, their caretaker gone.

Ryan Hanafin is scheduled to return to court in November.
