Eric Dane Describes Terrifying Moment His Daughter Saved Him From Drowning Amid ALS Battle in Posthumous Memoir

Eric Dane’s youngest daughter pulled him from the ocean after ALS stripped away his ability to swim.

The “Grey’s Anatomy” alum, 53, was vacationing in Antigua sometime after his 2025 amyotrophic lateral sclerosis diagnosis when he jumped into the water and found himself powerless to get back to the boat. Georgia Dane, then 14, and a friend dragged the actor to safety, a harrowing rescue the “Euphoria” star recounted in his posthumous memoir, “My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments.”

Dane broke down the moment during a June 2025 interview with Diane Sawyer on “Good Morning America.”

“When I jumped into the ocean that day and realized I couldn’t swim and generate enough power to get myself back to the boat. I thought, ‘Oh God,'” he told Sawyer.

“And I realized in that moment I’m not safe in the water anymore.”

“She [Georgia] dragged me back to the boat,” Dane continued, adding that he was in tears but insisted his daughter return to snorkeling and enjoying herself with her friend.

Once safely aboard, Dane’s first call was to his estranged wife, Rebecca Gayheart, 55. The “Jawbreaker” actress had filed for divorce in February 2018 after 14 years of marriage, though the couple never finalized the split and remained close, frequently holidaying together with their children.

“Georgia hands me my phone,” Dane wrote in the memoir excerpt.

“‘I can’t swim, Rebecca,’ I say. ‘I can’t swim.'”

“She explodes into tears and I weep with her. We cry together. Finally, the tears slow, become reduced to gasps, and when we’re both cried out, Rebecca says, ‘I was afraid of this day. I knew it would come. I’ve been dreading it.'”

Gayheart formally withdrew her divorce petition after Dane’s ALS diagnosis. The couple, who married in Las Vegas in 2004, share two daughters: Billie, born in 2010, and Georgia, born in 2011.

Dane died on Feb. 19 of respiratory failure, less than a year after going public with his diagnosis, according to his death certificate. He was 53.

This past June, Gayheart marked her first Father’s Day without Dane with a raw message on Instagram Stories. She posted photos of the actor with Billie, now 16, and Georgia, now 14.

“I hurt for my girls today,” she wrote above the images.

“It’s a ‘first’ of many to come. I know Eric is looking out for them every day. ❤️‍🩹,” she added.

The Antigua drowning scare and its aftermath form one of the most visceral passages in “My Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments,” which arrives from beyond the grave. The memoir captures Dane’s rapid physical decline and the family bonds that tightened around it, with Gayheart’s dread proving prophetic and Georgia’s quick action preventing a tragedy in the water.
