Texas Husband Fatally Shot in Front of Wife and Sister After Softball Game

Jarmon Mattix’s sister is demanding answers after the 36-year-old father of three was gunned down in a softball field parking lot in Humble, Texas, on Sunday.

The Harris County homicide detective sergeant, Sidney Miller, told reporters that a dispute erupted during the game and spilled outside, leaving four people shot and children among the witnesses. Mattix, a CDL truck driver, was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, his sister, and his mother-in-law were also caught in the gunfire, though their injuries were not life-threatening. An unidentified man was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries as well. Cops have not confirmed Mattix’s exact relationship to the injured victims.

Destiny Williams, Mattix’s sister, was standing right beside him when the bullets flew. “[The shooter] shot my brother right in front of me and my mother,” she said. She watched her sister-in-law scramble to save him: “My sister-in-law was on top of him, trying to give him CPR.”

Williams has been vocal about what she heard in those final moments. She claimed the shooter and another man hurled “different racial slurs” at her older brother before opening fire. Investigators have not confirmed any racial motive, though Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that angle “will be looked into.”

“My brother was targeted and it’s just a devastating situation we’re in right now,” Williams told KPRC. She emphasized his clean record: “My brother… didn’t have [a criminal] record. It’s the fact… sometimes being black, it can happen like that.”

Gonzalez has publicly branded the violence “senseless,” but Williams wants more than words from law enforcement. “Black. Brown. White. Blue,” she said. “It doesn’t matter. We all are people.” She urged cops to “do [their] job.”

Authorities have identified two suspects in the shooting, though it remains unclear whether charges have been filed. The circumstances that ignited the confrontation between the two groups are still under investigation.

The deadly clash unfolded at a softball game in the Houston suburb of Humble, where what should have been a Sunday afternoon of recreation turned into a bloodbath in the parking lot. Children who had come to watch or play saw the violence up close as adults exchanged gunfire and a father of three fell dead on the asphalt. The dispute’s exact trigger has not been disclosed by investigators, who continue to probe whether words exchanged carried racial animus or whether the conflict stemmed from something else entirely.

Mattix’s family is left mourning a man they describe as law-abiding and devoted to his three children, while grappling with the possibility that his final moments were shaped by hate. The investigation continues as detectives work to piece together the chain of events and determine what charges, if any, the two identified suspects will face.
