Christina Applegate Reveals MS Misdiagnosis in Shocking Health Update and Says ‘I Lost Everything’

Christina Applegate broke down on her podcast while revealing her MS diagnosis was wrong.

The “Married… with Children” alum, 53, shared the stunning news Tuesday on MeSsy, the podcast she co-hosts with Jamie-Lynn Sigler. Applegate told listeners that her doctor had recently walked into her room and delivered unexpected words: “Congratulations, you don’t have MS.”

“I was, like, not happy at all,” Applegate said. “Everybody else was so happy.”

The actress made clear that the misdiagnosis brought no relief. Her physical decline has continued unabated since she first received the MS diagnosis in 2021, and she remains trapped in a body that keeps failing her.

“You don’t get misdiagnosed and then all of the sudden I’m better,” she continued. “I haven’t gotten better. If anything, I’ve gotten worse.”

Applegate described her position now as being “back at square one,” stripped of the explanatory framework she had spent years adjusting to. The emotional weight of that reset showed through as she spoke through tears during the recording.

The reversal has left her without answers for symptoms that have only intensified. She indicated that her medical team now faces the task of tracing what has actually been happening inside her body since 2021, when the original diagnosis was made.

“That’s going to be an online investigation that my doctors are going to be getting into just to find out what has been going on since 2021, why did this happen?” she said on the podcast.

Applegate went public with her original MS diagnosis in August 2021, revealing it had come months earlier while she was filming the final season of her Netflix series “Dead to Me.” She had noticed symptoms including numbness and tingling in her extremities during production, and the diagnosis forced her to step back from on-camera work. The disease became central to her public identity in the years that followed, with Applegate using a cane at public appearances and speaking openly about the physical toll.

The misdiagnosis upends that narrative entirely. Where she once had a name for her condition and a community of fellow patients, she now faces an undefined illness with no roadmap.

Applegate launched MeSsy in early 2024 with Sigler, who has lived with MS herself since age 20. The podcast was conceived as a space for unfiltered conversation about chronic illness and the messy realities of living with compromised health. Tuesday’s episode delivered on that premise with raw, unscripted disclosure from its host.

Sigler was present for the recording as Applegate processed the news in real time, the exchange capturing the particular cruelty of medical uncertainty — the way a corrected diagnosis can feel less like liberation than another door slamming shut.

The actress has not indicated when she might learn what condition she actually has, or whether her doctors have begun narrowing possibilities.
